Since you wash off your facial cleanser right away, does the type you use actually matter? The short answer: Yes. We got to chat with Neutrogena's Scientific Engagement Skin Health Expert Era Anwar, who shared that cleansers have a big effect on your skin. If you use cleansers with harsh ingredients, it can "strip your skin of its natural lipids, leaving your skin tight and making the skin barrier susceptible to external aggressors." *Gulp.* So, maybe it’s time you recognize cleansers for what they are: the foundation of your skincare routine.
Here’s Anwar’s suggestion: “Look for gentle cleansers that have the technology to remove dirt without stripping the skin’s natural lipids. For example, the new and improved Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleansers leverages on a unique Amino Micellar Technology that uses gentle amino acid-based micelles to help remove 99 percent of impurities while retaining 99 percent of your skin's moisture with regular use. This matches the skin’s natural amino structure and allows the cleansers to cleanse without disrupting the delicate skin barrier.”
And so, we asked Anwar which cleansers go best for each skin type. Take notes as she reveals her tips and recommendations.
For those with normal to sensitive skin, we recommend a cleanser that is both effective and gentle. The new and improved Neutrogena Deep Clean Gentle Foaming Cleanser helps remove 99 percent of impurities while retaining 99 percent of skin moisture with regular use. With Amino Micellar technology that deeply and gently cleans without disrupting the skin barrier to help you get clearer and hydrated skin.
She also stressed the importance of moisturizing. Lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas like the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel work best for this skin type. This has prebiotic technology that helps “maintain a balanced skin moisture and oil production after cleansing.”
Dull skin happens when your skin is dehydrated. Anwar suggests using “a cleanser with Niacinamide that brightens uneven dull skin” and has cleansing but hydrating ingredients like Amino Micellar Technology. Her pick: the new and improved Neutrogena Deep Clean Brightening Foaming Cleanser. It contains both ingredients that can help you get glowing and hydrated skin.
To maintain the glow, don’t scrimp on moisturizer. She suggests Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel or Neutrogena Bright Boost Gel Cream. Its “Neoglucosamine [can help] fight dullness, reveal brighter, more even-toned skin, and help reduce [the appearance of] fine lines.”
Acne-prone skin can benefit from gentle cleansers with acne-fighting ingredients. Anwar likes the new and improved Neutrogena Deep Clean Acne Foaming Cleanser for this skin type. She reveals that the cleanser’s “salicylic acid and Amino Micellar technology helps fight acne breakouts without disrupting the delicate skin barrier.”
After washing, moisturize with Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. If acne persists, Anwar recommends consulting your derma to better assess your skin condition.
“If you have sensitive skin, please use a cleanser that is gentle and does not contain ingredients you’re sensitive to. So, try a new product one at a time to see if your skin will react,” Anwar says. For sensitive skin, she suggests the new Neutrogena Deep Clean Soothing Foaming Cleanser. Its CICA complex and Amino Micellar Technology combo can help rebalance your skin’s pH while gently cleansing your skin.
For your moisturizer, Anwar recommends doing a patch test to check if you will react to any of the product’s ingredients. Of course, you can also consult with your derma.
For beauty gurus and casual makeup users alike, Anwar suggests the new Neutrogena Micellar Gel with Micellar and CICA + Portulaca Complex. The micellar-cica-portulaca complex mix can help gently yet effectively remove makeup. It also has a soothing feel you’ll enjoy.
“Definitely double cleanse to ensure that you completely remove all the dirt and makeup from your skin,” Anwar advised. “You can pair the Neutrogena Deep Clean Micellar Gel with any of the Neutrogena Deep Clean Foaming Cleansers. So depending on your skin type, you can choose from Deep Clean Gentle for normal skin, Deep Clean Brightening for dull skin, Deep Clean Acne for acne-prone skin, and Deep Clean Soothing for sensitive skin.”
