From managing finances to thinking about your mental health, keep reading for some advice you can apply when you do your own search. ;)
Planning to buy your own house? Here are some adulting tips we learned from Angel Dei.
Buy a house when you're financially ready.
According to Angel, "You need to make sure that when you purchase a house, may pera ka talaga. May ipon ka, may extra money ka, and may extra extra money ka pa—kasi marami talagang expenses na hindi mo ine-expect." She said that buying a house is a big investment, and it's definitely different from getting an apartment. The bills are going to be more expensive, and you gotta be prepared for it.
Think about your mental health.
This is a major decision and though it may sound cliche, you do have to consider your emotional state. Buying a house can't be done overnight. It's a long process that requires a lot of planning and preparation. "Make sure kaya mo yung stress in buying a house, and all the problems that come with it," Angel emphasized.
Consider the location and neighborhood.
For Angel, she chose to buy a house in the South because she shared it's accessible to BGC and Makati, where she usually attends events and shoots for work. It helps to think about the places that you would regularly need to go to, and find houses within that area. You also might want to consider how close you are to the homes of your friends or family, in case there are emergencies. Of course, look into the neighborhood as well, because safety should always be a priority!
Create a budget (and actually stick to it).
Angel suggested that you ask yourself, "Anong amount ng house yung afford mo?" You have to set a limit when it comes to your expenses because aside from paying for the house itself, you'll be also shelling out money for other fees, home improvement projects, and the like.
Be prepared with the necessary government IDs and requirements.
Whether you're applying for a PAG-IBIG housing loan or processing payments with your bank, you must be ready to present the required documents and valid government IDs. Make sure to completely fill out those forms and double check each part to make sure that all the information is correct!
Don't be afraid to ask the important questions.
"Before purchasing a house, ask about the down payment and monthly amortization," Angel added. You should be able to understand what you're getting yourself into. Inquire about the title, capital gains tax, homeowner's association fees, and more. Pro tip from Angel: "Hindi lang dapat down payment ang meron kayo."
