5 Ways To De-Stress If Your Workplace Is Toxic

Make sure your deadlines and deliverables don't affect your well-being.

Impending deadlines, a demanding boss, and incompetent colleagues can turn a dream job into a huge nightmare, not to mention taking your stress levels to the limit. All that stress will eventually affect your health and sanity, so it’s important to find respite and balance from the toxicity of your workplace by doing things that help take the weight off your shoulders at the end of a rough day. Here are some ideas:

1. Work out.

Go for a run. Power walk. Enroll in a cycling class. Exercise can release endorphins that make you feel good and act as natural sedatives for both body and mind. If you don't have time to work out after office hours, incorporate exercise in the workplace by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or trading your chair for a stability ball.

2. Go offline.

The advancement of technology has done a lot of good, but it has also blurred the line between work life and home life. You’re always connected, so you end up taking work calls and answering emails even in your downtime. For at least an hour a day (and even more during the weekend), turn off your phone and tune out social media. Take this time to focus on what really matters: the people you love, tangible experiences, and your own well-being.

3. Put on your preferred playlist.

Listening to your all-time favorite tunes can be a great source of comfort at the end of a long day or an extremely harassing week. Music can slow down racing thoughts and help you emotionally recalibrate. Soothing music is also known to help reduce your heart rate and lower blood pressure.

4. Socialize.

Surrounding yourself with people, whether it's going out with a big group for happy hour or just coming home to family after an exhausting day, helps your mind move away from negative thoughts. Friends and family are also likely to offer comfort and empathy and make you laugh, which is exactly what you need to get rid of work-related tension and anxiety.

5. Take a hot shower with products that help you relax.

Sometimes, a hot shower can be all you need to de-stress. Use products that are infused with lavender and rosemary extracts. These herbs have been shown to calm the mind, soothe the skin, and relieve anxiety. Integrate them into your shower routine through Dove’s Nourishing Secrets range. It includes body cleansers, like the Dove Relaxing Ritual Body Wash and Dove Relaxing Ritual Beauty Bar, and haircare products, like the Dove Thickening Ritual Shampoo and Conditioner. Use lavender and rosemary after your shower by making sure your deodorant is formulated with them too. Choose between Dove's Calm & Soothe Roll-On and Calm & Soothe Aerosol.
