Onitsuka Tiger’s SS19 collection takes fresh inspiration from the peculiar vision of fashion designer Andrea Pompilio, which combines high fashion and functionality with gender-neutral and progressive elements of modern fashion.

As an Italian designer with a fashion-forward mentality, Pompilio describes his work with Onitsuka Tiger as a successful partnership, despite Onitsuka's rather traditional Japanese style of sportswear. To create the collection, Pompilio mined through Onitsuka Tiger's fashion archives for shapes and techniques that he could mix with his own unique designs—a marriage between heritage and modern styles.

The collection’s footwear, in particular, veered between nostalgic and Pompilio’s Italian passion for flare and polish. "There is one part of the collection that is completely redesigned and new. We call this the seasonal collection of shoes," he explains. "But the other half of the collection is made up of historical pieces and designs which have been changed completely with new colorways and material packs to bridge a link between heritage and modern pieces."

Onitsuka Tiger’s very first 1952 OK Basketball shoe made an exciting comeback with a variety of new colors and patterns. With its iconic octopus suction cup pattern on the outsole, the redesigned OT high top is the ideal transition piece for warmer seasons.

However, when it comes to Onitsuka Tiger shoes, perhaps there is no other signature style than the show-stopping Mexico 66. The sneakers’ claim to fame was seen in Bruce Lee’s Game of Death, in which he paired the iconic shoes with a yellow and black one-piece tracksuit. "In any season, we try to make obvious references like this," the designer says. "The tracksuit looks straight out of a Kill Bill movie!"

Additional outfits that paid homage to styles of decades past included looks that doubled up on denim; matte sequenced tracksuits; oversized fanny packs and Hawaiian bucket hats—a composite of fashion trends that—although may now be considered passe and old school—didn’t seem too out-of-place nor out-of-time on the runway.

Andrea Pompilio’s Onitsuka Tiger SS19 collection will be launched in stores from February to April 2019 and will be available at Greenbelt 5 and Shangri-La Plaza Mall.
