How To Deal With Oily Hair

Don't OD on dry shampoo!

Dealing with oily skin is one thing, but taming oily locks is another issue altogether. Here, seven ways to manage greasy hair:

1. Be picky with your shampoos. Always read the ingredients and the labels of shampoos that you pick. A lot of them are specifically targeted for people with dry and damaged hair, so they’re most likely infused with oils. That’s exactly the type of shampoo that you don’t need.

2. Rinse properly. Sometimes, your hair becomes oily because of the excess products left on your hair. After applying your shampoo, spend at least 30 to 45 seconds rinsing under the shower to make sure that you rinse everything off.

3. Use dry shampoo. If by lunch time you notice your roots greasing up, use a dry shampoo to sop up excess oil. But as amazing dry shampoo is, remember not to overdo it. Using too much of the product can lead to scalp irritation and even formation of pimples and bumps on your head! Yikes. (Tip: Loose translucent powder works just as well, too!)

4. Try clarifying shampoos once a month. Clarifying shampoos are formulated to remove product residue from your scalp to really get your hair clean. But because these are formulated to be quite strong, using them regularly isn’t a good idea.

5. Do not skip conditioner. Using conditioner will strengthen and rehydrate your hair. The key to using it properly is only applying it on the ends of your hair and never directly on your scalp.

6. Rinse with cold water. When you shower, be sure to turn up the temperature of the water when it’s time to rinse your hair. Warm water will only simulate sebum (oil) production in your scalp. Cold water on the other hand, closes your cuticles.

7. Ask your doctor for help. If you change your hair habits completely and notice that your hair situation remains the same, it might be time to check in with your doctor. In some cases, oily hair can be a symptom of hormonal imbalances or thyroid problems.
