This Face Powder Is Like A Moisturizer, Setting Powder, And Oil Blotter In One

It's so magical!

As someone with supremely dry, flaky, dehydrated skin, I rarely ever wear face powders, especially during the cooler months. Because let's be honest—unless you know WTF you're doing when you sweep some loose powder over your already-dry face, there's a good chance your skin is going to end up looking like a crumbling piece of Melba toast.

So when a new face powder from Becca Cosmetics rolled across my desk a month (or, cough, two) ago that claimed to also moisturize skin, I was hella skeptical. I mean, there's no way a setting powder could hydrate my Crypt Keeper-level skin when my favorite moisturizers can barely do that. But after two weeks of staunchly ignoring it on my vanity, I finally gave in and tested it out one morning. And holy hell—it was freaking magical.

Seriously, if my life were a cartoon, tiny stars and hearts would have surrounded my face. Because even though the powder is loose and, you know, powdery to the touch, it felt almost cold and wet when I swirled it on, as if I had just massaged on a cold cream. But when I pushed my face up to the mirror, I was surprised to find no shiny, smudged layers of residue on my skin like you might think—instead, my T-zone was left with a sheer, semi-matte dusting of powder that felt, against all logic, moisturized. I MEAN, WHAT??? That’s pure witchcraft.

But, as it turns out, the wet effect isn't due to voodoo and sorcery—it's due to science. Take a look at the formula, and you'll see that it's filled with glycerin and dipropylene glycol, two ingredients known as humectants that hold moisture in the skin to keep it hydrated. "Those humectants, along with water, are trapped in pockets within the loose powder that break open when you rub it on," says cosmetic chemist Joe Cincotta. "As the water evaporates, it gives off a cooling effect on your skin, yet it never forms a cream-like consistency, because it doesn't contain any emulsifiers or waxes."

Fascinating, right? You're basically just swirling on a serum-laced face powder, which is a freaking dream for anyone with dry skin. Of course, because it is filled with so many hydrators, it's not going to mattify your makeup quite as well as a traditional setting powder. Example: After lightly swirling it over my makeup with a big fluffy brush—make sure to tap off the excess—my T-zone stayed crease- and shine-free for about four hours, which is a few hours shorter than I normally get when I use other powders.

Still, the fact that my skin also didn't feel tight or dry like it normally does with traditional setting powders (which tend to suck the moisture out of your face) is well worth the extra touch-ups throughout the day. So if you're stuck in the dry-skin-makeup limbo like I was, I highly suggest picking up this powder ASAP. And please, feel free to DM me with photos of your tears of happiness.
