Lies You've Been Told About Cellulite

A no-BS explanation of cellulite.

There is much mystery surrounding cellulite, but whatever you hear and read about it, one thing's for sure: There is NOTHING wrong with having it. 

The many "miracle" cures out there claiming to help reduce the appearance of fat deposits that show as dimples on your thighs, butt or arms, are overwhelming to say the least. So to separate the fact from the fiction, we asked Felice Kosakavich, Chief Clinical Dietitian for Cassena Care, to myth-bust and give us the truth. And the truths are reassuring and refreshing to read:

1. MYTH: Cardio exercise can reverse cellulite.

"One study by researchers at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, Massachusetts, found that adults who did three 30-minute aerobic workouts each week for eight weeks lost four pounds, but gained no muscle—and only slightly improved body composition. Cellulite requires a multi-faceted approach to make real progress."

2. MYTH: That new miracle cream can cure stubborn cellulite.

"Sadly, expensive creams aren't likely to make much of a difference in the battle against cellulite. Despite what you might read on their labels, no topical creams have been shown to permanently reduce the appearance of cellulite."

3. MYTH: Only the unlucky few get cellulite.

"The facts are that between 80 to 98 percent of women have some form of cellulite on their bodies. The cellulite is caused by fibrous bands that run perpendicular along a woman's body, thus causing the dimpling."

4. MYTH: Cellulite is caused by toxins in the body.

"Cellulite is caused by underlying fat deposits that push through layers of collagen fibers or connective tissue under the skin."

5. MYTH: Cellulite only occurs when people are out of shape.

"Cellulite can appear on all body types, since there are various reasons that the connective tissues can be weakened, including: hormones, lack of exercise/muscle tone, excess fat, and poor circulation in the body."

6. MYTH: Liposuction will get rid of cellulite forever.

"Most cosmetic procedures often make fat distribution more uneven, causing cellulite to be more visible resulting in an even worse appearance after the treatments."
