ICYDK, the cleanser is the backbone of a good skincare routine. It's the first step to getting all the grime and oil from your face, so you definitely need a *good* one. (Looking for recos? Hyram, a YouTuber and skin specialist, recently uploaded a video where he talks about the most common mistakes people do when cleansing, and it's honestly eye-opening. Check out some of the things he discussed:

The Most Common Mistakes People Do When Cleansing Their Face
1.You're cleansing your skin for too long.
Cleansing your skin for too long can lead to your natural oils being stripped off, a compromised skin barrier, and increased sensitivity. According to Hyram, 30 to 60 seconds is more than enough.
2. You're using too much product.
You might be tempted to use a huge dollop of cleanser on your face to really make sure you're getting the ~full experience~. In reality, you only need about a blueberry-sized amount.
3. You're using the wrong cleanser for your skin.
This is one of the more popular reasons your skin might not be agreeing with your cleanser. According to Hyram, it's best to find people with the same skin type as you and go off of their advice. Alternatively, you may also read up on website articles—like ours, for example—for some recos!
4. You're cleansing too frequently.
Typically, you only need to cleanse your face in the morning and at night. Doing it more than twice will lead to the stripping of the natural oils your complexion needs. If you do need to wash your face (like after working out), make sure to only use a very gentle cleanser.
5. You don't use a cleansing oil or balm beforehand.
If you wear makeup or even just sunscreen, you need to use a cleansing oil or balm before your normal facial wash. This added step will ensure that the sebum, makeup, and dirt on your face are removed before proceeding with the next step.
6. You're rubbing your cleanser too harshly on your skin.
You might be tempted to apply a ton of pressure when washing your face to ensure that you really "clean" it. According to Hyram, the best way is by doing slow and gentle circles.
7. You're using a harsh scrub.
A harsh scrub, combined with applying too much pressure, can damage your skin, cause more sensitivity, and even welcome breakouts. If you want to exfoliate your face, we recommend using *chemical* ones. (Check out our list of recos here!)
If you went through all of these steps and your cleanser still doesn't work then it's time to find a new one! Remember, skincare products aren't one-size-fits-all. It's a matter of trial and error.
