Your lips will probably get a lot of action this Valentine’s Day, so it’s best to be prepared. Here, five easy ways to prep your puckers before the 14th!
Hydration is key.
Aside from drinking lots of water, slather on a moisturizing balm every hour, on the hour. Oh, and don't forget to apply pre-bedtime, too.
Protect your puckers.
Go for lip products that have an SPF of at least 30. Studies show that shiny lip glosses actually pose serious harm to your puckers, because the shine allows harmful UV rays to penetrate deeply into the skin.
Don’t pick on the skin on your lips. Instead, give 'em a good scrub at least once a week. After brushing your teeth (when your lips are still wet), gently scrub in circular motions to slough off flakes. If you really want to up your routine, invest in an exfoliating lip scrub (we like The Kiss Lip Scrub by Lush, P395). Wash off, then dry with a towel. Slather on some balm and you're good to go!
Skip "medicated" lip products.
Medicated lip products usually contain eucalyptus or menthol. While the cool sensation may feel nice and tingly, they can actually really irritate and inflame your lips. Go for unscented and unflavored products instead.
Get rid of your lip-licking habit.
Licking your lips doesn't actually moisturize your lips; it dries them out. Your saliva contains enzymes that helps break down food, which can thin out the skin on your lips.
