We know a long, hot shower sounds like the perfect thing to cap off a stressful day, but while it may feel relaxing, it doesn’t actually do your skin any favors. In fact, you may have a lot of shower habits that are actually damaging your skin. But no need to fret; we’ve listed five ways to lather up so your skin stays smooth and glowing:
1. Make sure the temperature is just right.
We’re not going to tell you to bathe in water set to exactly 30.19 °C, but you do have to be conscious about the water temperature. Hot water feels good, but it can dry out your skin and scalp. Instead, shower under a stream of lukewarm or, better yet, cold water.
2. Choose the washcloth over the loofah.
While the loofah is cute, puffy, and looks great in your shower, it barely does the job if you want to be scrubbed. Instead, choose a nylon washcloth or a nylon shower glove. You’ll get the exfoliation you need, plus, they dry faster, which means less time for bacteria to crop up on the washcloth.
3. Don’t forget to wash your back.
Never forget this part of your body! And with the previous step, it’s even easier to get to hard-to-reach places. When you don’t wash and rinse your back thoroughly, leftover hair product like conditioner and shampoo may wreak havoc on your skin and trigger backne.
4. Use a moisturizing body wash.
Honestly, skip the antibacterial bar soap. If you care for your body as much as you invest in skincare for your face, a body wash is your best bet. Bars tend to leave the surface of the skin squeaky clean and stripped of oils, so when you towel off, you end up with dry and chalky skin. Instead, try a body wash like Dove’s Deeply Nourishing Body Wash. It has a gentle formula that features NutriumMoisture™ technology with exfoliating beads, which is meant to gently wash away dead skin and replenish the skin’s moisture barrier, so skin stays softer longer.
