Other common skin concerns besides pimples are dark spots and dull skin. If you can relate, chances are you’ve experimented with viral trends like skin peels to DIY home remedies to brighten your skin—not knowing that these do more harm than good. Yikes!

One way to properly treat dull skin and dark spots is with the help of an expert. So, we took it upon ourselves to chat with a certified Dermatologist and a member of the Philippine Dermatological Society, Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang (@thedermamamaph). Dr. Lao-Ang gave us the 101 on everything dark spots and dull skin. Take notes, Cosmo girls!

What causes dark spots and uneven skintone?

“Acne, UV exposure, inflammation, hormonal changes, genetics, and medications increase melanin, which increases dark spots,” Dr. Lao-Ang explained. Meanwhile, dryness is one of the significant reasons you may be experiencing dull, lifeless-looking skin.

What steps should I take to prevent dark spots?

One, know its causes. “Knowing its triggers can make you more aware and help lessen the risk of developing pigmentation,” Dr. Lao-Ang shared. Two, invest in proper skincare. “Investing in proper skincare is essential to help prevent acne and its complications, like acne marks, scars, [and dryness].” Three, don’t try every skincare trend you see online! They may be harmful without you knowing. Be discerning and do your research before anything else.

What steps should I take to properly treat dark spots and uneven skin tone if I already have them?

Use the correct skincare products and sun protection regularly. “Sun protection is non-negotiable. It helps prevent dark spots and can even help fade away hyperpigmentation,” Dr. Lao-Ang shared. She recommends using two fingerbreadths of sunscreen for the whole face. If you’re outdoors, she recommends reapplying every two hours.

What ingredients can help me brighten my skin?

“Look for gentle brightening ingredients like Niacinamide, or a combination of Niacinamide and Sea Daffodil, Arbutin, and Tranexamic Acid. Chemical exfoliants like hydroxy acids, if used properly, can also address dull skin,” Dr. Lao-Ang shared. It's important to note that using products with these ingredients regularly is essential to maintain bright and healthy skin.

What products do you recommend to help address dark spots and uneven skin tone?

Dr. Lao-Ang likes gentle formulations since they’re suitable for all skin types—including easily irritated skin. Plus, they’re non-drying, which helps prevent dull skin. Among her preferred brands is Cetaphil Bright Healthy Radiance for skin brightening.

What should I avoid if I have dull skin and dark spots?

“Avoid rubbing and scrubbing, harsh ingredients, over-exfoliating, and pimple popping,” the doctor shared.

A great skincare routine that's done regularly is the foundation for achieving bright, healthy skin. To build it, set your skincare goals and from there, identify the ingredients you need to build your routine. And if clear, bright, and even-toned skin is your goal, you can count on Cetaphil Bright Healthy Radiance to help—with regular use, of course! It’s derma-developed and prescribed.

Cetaphil’s Bright Healthy Radiance includes the Brightness Reveal Creamy Cleanser, Brightness Refresh Toner, Brightening Day Protection Cream with SPF 15, and Brightening Night Comfort Cream.
