Rashes Could Be A Symptom Of COVID-19, Experts Say

Doctors have noticed that COVID-19 patients also have this skin condition.

With COVID-19 declared as a pandemic, everyone around the world is extra cautious of their health and surroundings. This potentially fatal disease can spread through droplets from an infected person who sneezes or coughs, which is why physical distancing is highly advised, combined with frequent hand-washing.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease affects people in different ways. The most common symptoms would be fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some may experience aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, vomiting, and diarrhea. There are even reports that loss of taste and smell are also signs that one has COVID-19. In recent cases, another symptom was observed: Patients exhibited skin rashes, varying from discoloration, lesions, blisters, to gangrene. (Visit reportr's COVID-19 case tracker to check the latest stats in the Philippines daily.)

Joshua Zeichner, MD, board-certified dermatologist and Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research at Mount Sinai Hospital’s Department of Dermatology in New York, told Refinery29 that COVID-19 patients had hives and small bruise-like rashes on their skin. In Italy, there were also cases of patients exhibiting skin rashes. Dr. Sebastiano Recalcati of the Department of Dermatology at Alessandro Manzoni Hospital in Lecco compiled these in a medical report.

This new discovery led the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) to create a global database for health professionals to record any dermatological symptoms observed in COVID-19 patients. Hopefully, this will help doctors understand better how the virus attacks the body.
