Runway Report: Colors Of Summer

From the most cheerful shade of yellow to the most elegant of blues, from flashy reds to sophisticated nudes, see the hues you should strut in this season.

By now, you’ve already listed your summer to-buy list, including those latest gadgets, summer beauty stash, and this season’s latest ready-to-wear pieces and cute bikinis. (With Forever 21 finally opening a branch in SM Makati, we know what store you have in mind when you do go on that shopping trip!)

When you think of summer fashion, don't limit yourself to mini dresses, tank tops, shorts, and the shortest of skirts. You can't wear those to a dinner date, to work, or to formal affairs you're sure to attend this season (don't you feel like it's wedding season all year round?). So how do you pick a gown, a pantsuit, a cocktail dress, or a blazer that's summer-friendly? Choose items in the season's colors, like orange, yellow, red, honeysuckle, ocean blue, aqua green, and the staple browns and nudes.

All these colors and more were presented at the Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011. In one show, Whisper presented the Premiere B collection, which includes their own Confidence Collection, featuring local designers' take on feminine, laid-back summer garments. Their Blue & White Line showcased the brightest blues that remind you of the ocean, and the Purple Line showcased an array of clothes in one of the season's hottest hues.

Among the collections presented included that of Alodia Cecilia, whose draped dresses with woven details are perfect for dinner dates, making you look more poised yet fun. Emily Sy's collection reminds us of the elegant-looking the Raffles Hotel of Singapore, a top destination for jetsetters. The predominantly chiffon collection gives you an air of allure and class--just what you need for formal occasions.

If you’re the type to pack light, take a page out of Jaki Penalosa's book, as her collection of dresses can be worn from day to night. She used Filipino fabrics like jusi, pina, abaca, and silk cocoon, and created clothes with a more modern flair.

Those hitting beach parties soon will love the minimalist yet flattering pieces from Lizanne Cua’s “Radioactive Collection.” The lightweight polyester jersey material would allow you to move your hips with ease as you party the night away.

Cosmo reminder: No matter what outfit you wear, be sure you wear the outfit, and not the other way around. Don't be dictated by trends; carefully plan the outfits that suit you best, and wear them with confidence this summer.
