5 Sheet Mask Mistakes You Could Be Making And How To Fix Them

Don't rinse your face after masking!

Incorporating a sheet mask in your skincare routine is one of the easiest ways to ~upgrade~ our skincare routine as one mask is packed with essences and serums that are beneficial for our complexion. Plus, it's pretty easy and straightforward to use. You just need to take it out of the pack and plop it on your face. What we don't know, however, is that we can actually still make mistakes, even with such a simple product. Below, we list down the potential blunders to take note of:

  1. Leaving a sheet mask on for too long.

When using a sheet mask, it becomes way too easy to go into ~relax mode~ and forget about how much time you're supposed to leave it on. You may think you're milking all the serums or essences from the product by using it up until it's dry. We hate to break it to you, but this habit just makes the sheet mask suck out your face's natural moisture. This will leave your complexion more parched than before.

Solution: To help you remember, try setting an alarm on your phone to go off after the instructed amount of time. If you really can't trust yourself to get up once you're deep in relaxation mode, you may opt to use a sleeping mask. They work the same way as regular sheet masks do, but the latter is designed for overnight use.

  2. Using one that's not meant for your skin type.

Sheet masks can often be seen as a "one-type-fits-all" kind of product, but there is actually a lot of varieties to choose from, with each one meant to answer a specific skin concern. If you're not careful in picking the right one, you may end up with breakouts or irritation.

Solution: If you have oily or acne-prone skin, try using a charcoal- or tea tree-infused mask. If you suffer from a dry complexion, opt for one that's loaded with hyaluronic acid.

  3. Placing it before cleansing your skin.

Using a sheet mask even before cleansing your face will not allow its nutrients to seep in and work its magic.

Solution: To make sure you're getting the full potential of your sheet mask, always cleanse and exfoliate your face beforehand. This is to ensure that the nutrients will actually sink into your skin and not just sit on the surface.

  4. Rinsing your face afterward.

Washing your face after applying the mask just wastes the product. Your skin needs time to properly absorb all the ~good stuff~ from the sheet.

Solution: After taking off your mask, give the essence or serum some time to settle into your skin. You may also pat it in to really push the product in. When it no longer feels sticky, follow it up with your night cream or moisturizer.

  5. Throwing away the unused essence.

When opening a new packet, you may notice that the sheet mask is *dripping* with serums or essences. Don't make the rookie mistake of throwing it away—you can definitely repurpose it the remaining product!

Solution: Instead of throwing away the remaining product, you may apply it to your neck, elbows, and knees.
