Face masks have become an essential part of your daily outfit, but it doesn’t mean you’ve gotten comfortable wearing them, especially in this tropical weather. Sweat, oils, and dirt can get trapped under your mask, and friction between the cloth and your face can irritate your skin—even possibly leading to maskne.

Mask acne comes in the form of acne mechanica, or pimples brought about by friction, rubbing, or pressure. These kinds of irritations can cause your skin to weaken, allowing bacteria to penetrate it and lead to breakouts. But don’t worry. There are ways to #SkiptheMaskne while staying safe! Below are our top tips on how to keep your skin clear of annoying maskne.

1. Wash your cloth mask.

In case you’re still using disposable face masks, get yourself a cloth mask, stat. It’s a much better investment financially and environmentally (plus, some of them have super cute designs!). The only trade-off with cloth masks is that it’s absolutely critical for you to wash these after each use in order to get rid of oils, dead skin, and dirt that get stuck in the fabric. To prevent skin irritation, only use fragrance-free, hypoallergenic detergents when washing your cloth masks.

2. Wear lightweight makeup.

As much as you love serving ~lewks~ even while wearing a face mask, you may want to consider ditching your full-coverage makeup and opt for breathable cosmetics instead. Bring back your no-makeup makeup look and edit your products as necessary to make sure you don’t clog your pores and cause maskne. 3. Use an antibacterial cleanser daily.
