We’re all guilty of having moments when removing makeup is at the bottom of the priority list. Let’s face it, after a night out of partying and tequila shots, it’s just so much easier to crash in bed without scrubbing your face clean of makeup.
At night, the skin repairs itself by regenerating new skin cells and shedding off dead ones for clearer and brighter skin. So if you don't remove the morning's skincare and makeup products before sleeping, you prevent this natural regenration process from happening, which leads to clogged pores and inflamed skin. Yikes.
Good Housekeeping reports that not taking the time to remove your makeup at night can lead to irreversible damage. The makeup we wear in the morning can attract free radicals that can lead to faster skin aging if left on the skin to stay. Interestingly, in 2013, Anna Pursglove of the Daily Mail conducted an experiment by not removing her makeup before sleeping for an entire month. When she finished, dermatologists found that her skin aged by almost 10 years. Yikes!
The only solution is to religiously remove your makeup every day. There should be the same amount of effort in taking off makeup as putting it on. Good skin is forever!
A tip beauty girls swear by is keeping a pack of makeup wipes on your nightstand. That way, you can wipe off the day’s face before you hit the sack. When you wake up in the morning, rush to the bathroom and exfoliate your skin to unclog pores and remove dirt, grease, and makeup that was left overnight. Of course, this doesn’t beat double cleansing your face, but it’s better than nothing.
So the next time you ever consider sleeping with a full face of makeup on, think of how hard you’ve been working to get better skin. You’ve gone as far as creating a full-blown three- or four-step skincare routine already! Don’t stop!
