Hello, everyone. In today's edition of "What's New In Social Media," we tackle the latest term that's been going around: VSCO girl. I first heard about it during my vacation in the US, and I thought that maybe the ~Instagram movement~ was exclusive there. But when I got back to Manila, I saw some who fit the description perfectly, which made me believe that there are Pinay VSCO girls, too—I just haven't seen them on my feed yet, LOL. So, the VSCO girl investigation commenced.
In case you're not familiar with VSCO, it's a photo-editing app that allows you to customize the look of your pics through filters. It's also where one can upload ~aesthetic~ photos for everyone to see without the number of "likes." There's no pressure, so users find VSCO a chill space to share content. Most Instagrammers also use this to improve the posts on their IG feed.
Anyway, back to the VSCO girl. The VSCO girl is not necessarily just found on the app—they are also on IG (where else?). According to Urban Dictionary, the number one resource for pop culture terms, a VSCO girl "wears oversized t-shirts or sweatshirts with Nike shorts. [She] has Vans, Crocs, Birks (Birkenstock sandals), and wears a shell necklace. She also wears tube tops and jean shorts. She always has a Hydro Flask. She can't leave home without a scrunchie and her favorite car is a jeep." The description is so detailed that I kind of felt attacked by some of it, LOL.
The Cut has an even more detailed description of the VSCO girl. She is characterized as a modern eco-warrior: She patronizes items that can save the environment: metal straws, a Fjällräven backpack (a sustainably made bag), and a Hydro Flask (not just any reusable tumbler, mind you). But more importantly, her green lifestyle screams ~aesthetic~!
BTW, VSCO girls have their own language. You can always hear them saying, "And I oop..." (to express surprise) and "sksksks" (to refer to excitement).
