Growing up, we were all huge fans of The Princess Diaries. Admit it, you're still waiting for grandma to say "jk you're a princess" and sweep you off to Genovia where you meet a handsome Chris Pine...err, noble man. But if that fantasy doesn't turn into a reality, then at least we have period dramas with beautiful wardrobes and gorgeous men! If you're even slightly obsessed with Netflix's The Crown, here are five more shows that should be next on your list.
Very loosely based on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, this period romance takes place in the 16th century French court. Mary has been engaged to Prince Francis of France since she was six years old, but finds herself in a love triangle between her betrothed and Sebastian, King Henry II's illegitimate son (therefore Francis' half-brother!). If the "love triangle between brothers" plotline sounds familiar, it's because Reign airs on the CW Network—aka home to The Vampire Diaries.
Try not to swoon, for the show is full of hot actors. Those accents! THE COSTUMES. If you were Mary, who would you choose to rule beside you? ~*heart eyes*~
2. The Royals
As a loose adaptation of Michelle Ray's novel Falling for Hamlet, actress Elizabeth Hurley stars as Queen Helena, queen consort of England, along with William Moseley and Alexandra Park as her twin children, Prince Liam and Princess Eleanor. When heir to the throne prince Robert dies, chaos erupts as the family fears for their future as royals. But dare they trust outside help?
Bonus: if Prince Liam (portrayed by William Moseley) seems familiar, it's because you've seen him before. The actor also played Peter Pevensie in the Chronicles of Narnia series!
Queen Elizabeth II may be the longest reigning monarch in British history, but the record previously went to her great great grandmother. This 2016 series depicts the early years of Queen Victoria's reign, from her coronation at 18 years old, to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert, to the birth of their children.
If you love learning the history of the British royal family (with some fictional liberties sprinkled here and there) this is a must-watch.
4. The White Queen
Based on Philippa Gregory's fictional historical novels The Cousins' War, the series follows the lives of three powerful women and how their manipulations impacted history. Taking place during the 15th century Wars of the Roses, the House of York and the House of Lancaster battle it out for the right to the throne—and the title King of England.
Tired of waiting for a new season of Game of Thrones? Watch a few episodes—you'll thank us later.
5. White Princess
The White Queen was so popular among fans that a sequel was born. The White Princess takes place after the Wars of the Roses—to unite England, Elizabeth of York is forced to marry newly-crowned King Henry VII. But don't be fooled, for the new queen is anything but complacent. Expect family loyalty to cause a whole lot of drama.
