A Day After Her Surprise Wedding, Terminally Ill 25-Year-Old Gets Hope For Recovery

"We're hopeful to beat it again and go into remission and spend the rest of our lives together."

Liza Heaton, 25, was recently married in a surprise celebration put together by her husband, Wyatt Heaton, after they found out her rare form of cancer had returned following 3 years of remission—and was terminal. But the day after the wedding, the couple learned there was actually hope for Liza's recovery.

Liza had been told she had less than one month to live when 150 guests showed up for what was billed as a fish fry at her aunt's house, and a final chance for her family and friends to spend time with her. She had been spending just 30 minutes a day out of bed, but partied for eight hours straight at the wedding. "I wanted that day to be about the wedding, not about cancer," Liza told 11 Alive.

"I kept thinking, she needs to be on her fluids, but her dad said, 'No. She's having the time of her life,'" Wyatt added.

Now, there is hope for Liza's treatment. The day after the wedding, Liza found out an obstruction that had prevented treatment had cleared, and she was able to take a chemo pill to stop the tumors from growing. Liza's mom hopes the pill will work, enabling Liza to enter a clinical trial in the spring.

Liza added, "Last week we were thinking hospice. Only a few weeks left. Then with this chemo pill we weren't given a time frame. We're hopeful to beat it again and go into remission and spend the rest of our lives together."
