Before they became the established artists they are today, who would have thought Angel Locsin and Solenn Heussaff crossed paths in their teens, specifically at commercial auditions aka VTRs? Well, they did, and Angel told a fun story about her humble beginnings when she did a guesting at Matteo Guidicelli's podcast, MattRuns.
Angel was asked how she ended up in showbiz and she talked about her hustle at a young age to help out her family. "Naghahanap ako ng way para maka-contribute sa bahay," Angel said. "Isa akong batang raketera. Yung, 'Okay may fashion show? Game. May audition dito? Game.' Pero hindi sumasayad sa isip ko na pwede ako mag-artista, kasi sa pamilya ko wala namang showbiz. Napaka-simpleng tao ng pamilya ko."
She then talked about how she stumbled upon the ~world of commercial auditions~ when she accompanied a friend to one of them: "Habang nag-aantay, pina-audition na rin ako. 'Okay, nandito na rin ako.'" Her OOTD at said audition: a cap, backpack, and a wrestling t-shirt ("Kasi uso 'yon dati")!
Angel said that she was confident about her looks, yes ("Alangan sabihin ko ang pangit ko, 'di ba? Wala nang ibang pupuri sa akin kundi sarili ko, tatay ko!")—but there were some "limitations." And here comes in Solenn, then also an up-and-coming commercial model who became Angel's somewhat ~rival~: "Si Solenn dati lagi kong nakakasabay 'yan sa mga VTR. Wala pang GMA noon, mga commercial pa lang." Angel recalled how she would commute from Caloocan to Makati via bus and MRT to get to her auditions. "So ang pawis ko, diretso akong audition," she said. "Papasok si Solenn galing kotse! Ang ganda ganda ni Solenn talaga! Yung alam mong gusto ko na lang umuwi kasi alam mong hindi ka makukuha!"
Many years later, Angel told Solenn about how she would go home when she'd see Solenn at the same audition! "Kinausap ko na si Solenn na, 'Solenn, alam mo ba dati 'pag pumupunta kayo sa audition, umuuwi na lang ako kasi alam kong hindi ako makukuha?' Hindi niya ako natatandaan." Angel. however, stressed the fact that Solenn was always super nice and not a snob to her at all. Continuing her story, Angel said, "Tawa lang siya ng tawa! 'Gel, sorry,' gumaganoon siya. 'Bakit ka nagso-sorry, ano ka ba!'"
Angel ended the story by turning a bit sentimental, saying that her teen self didn't know how far she'd come in showbiz: "'Pag nagco-commercial ka, nagau-audition ka, may isang daan na babae, isang daan na lalaki diyan tapos 'di mo alam na mapipili ka. Pero hanggang doon lang akala ko. Hindi ko alam na papasok ako sa industriyang 'to."
