In the latest development of the Julia-Gerald-Bea controversy, Bela Padilla explained on Tonight With Boy Abunda the real reason why she unfollowed Julia Barretto and when she did it. It wasn’t because of a recent dinner with Bea Alonzo, Angel Locsin, Angelica Panganiban, and other celebs, a photo of which became controversial in light of the showbiz issue.
Bela explained that it was simply a dinner attended by artists after an ABS-CBN event. “I didn’t know that it was going to be posted with the hashtag #ParaKayB, but at the same time, it doesn’t matter if that dinner was for Bea or anything else. It doesn’t matter because they’re all people I work with at ABS-CBN. I just feel like it’s not supposed to be a big deal.”
“I don’t hide the fact that I’m very close to Angelica. I was comfortable in this situation. What I’m not comfortable with is the insinuation that I unfollowed Julia because of this dinner. I did not. I actually texted Tita Marjorie [Barretto], my best friend Dani [Barretto], and Julia the day after because it became such a big deal. I got so many messages from Julia’s fans, which are super hateful.”
Addressing the fans who sent her negative messages, Bela said, “Kalma, kids. Social media is not everything. One picture of a dinner doesn’t define our future. Sometimes we really need to chill—and go to school. I feel like masyado kayong maraming oras sa Instagram at libreng Facebook, guys.” She told host Boy Abunda, “Some words kasi are super hurtful, Tito Boy."
For the record, Bela said she unfollowed Julia last year, way before the issue blew up, along with other artists. “I was doing an Instagram detox. From following 4,000 people, I’m down to 2,000 plus. I’m trying to stay away from social media as much as I can… My plan was to go down to zero. I never got around to doing it because I got busy.”
Bela emphasized, “I just want to clarify that I didn’t unfollow Julia because I’m taking sides. I honestly don’t even know the story of what’s happening.” She added, “I want to speak for everyone at that table. Nobody said anything. It wasn’t an attack towards someone. It was literally dinner. So sana let’s not think badly of people.”
The actress said that she and Dani are “super okay.” After reaching out to Dani, Marjorie, and Julia, Bela said, “I don’t even feel like I need to explain anymore because I explained to the right people. But at the same time, I don’t see anything wrong with having dinner with Bea, Angel, and Angelica.”
Bela added that she has written several scripts for Bea and hopes to work with her in the future. As for speculation about Bela and Angel after Angel got engaged to Neil Arce, Bela’s ex, Bela said, “Angel and I—we go way back. I was probably one of the first people who texted Angel to congratulate her [after the proposal].”
Bela also addressed speculation about being “second choice” for the remake of Miracle In Cell No. 7 after Nadine Lustre dropped out of the project. “Hindi siya problema, not at all. Basta I get paid and I do my job, I’m fine. This is such a big opportunity for me. I love Korean dramas. And I never thought I would get a chance [to work with Aga Muhlach].”
After watching the TV clip of Nadine praising Bela’s talents and saying that she can’t think of anyone better to replace her in the movie, Bela said, “I’m thankful. That’s such a straightforward statement. I hope I get to work with her someday also. I think it’s such a brave thing for Nadine to admit na she can’t commit to this project.” Addressing Nadine, she said, “I’m happy to take over for you in this project and I will do well. I will try.”
