On January 20, 2021, filmmaker Jerrold Tarog tweeted that he had just completed the script for his new movie about former President Manuel Quezon. He wrote, “Kakatapos lang [ng] script. Tingnan natin kung i-aprub.”
Based on Tarog's photo, the title of the film is Quezon.
Third historical film in the last five years
The Quezon biopic will be the third of Tarog’s historical films dedicated to Philippine heroes. The first was Heneral Luna, which was released in 2015 and starred John Arcilla in the titular role; and the second was Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, which showed in theaters in 2018 and starred Paulo Avelino.
According to Variety in 2015, Heneral Luna was “one of the most expensive and highest-grossing Filipino films of all time.” Meanwhile, Goyo received various nominations at the 2019 Entertainment Editors’ Choice Awards and won Best Production Design.
In the last two films, Quezon was portrayed by Benjamin Alves and TJ Trinidad as the younger and more senior president, respectively. They will reprise their roles again for the new movie, since it aims to show the first president of the Philippine Commonwealth at different stages of his life.
