It seems like every year, more and more Christmas movies are produced. And while most of them are cute and fun, rarely do we feel like watching them more than once. Very few hold a candle to the truly great Christmas rom-coms we grew up watching. So if none of the newer holiday films are doing the trick, turn to any of these eight movies to warm your heart this season.
The Holiday
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black
Plot: Amanda (Cameron) leads a busy life as someone who produces big Hollywood movie trailers. After breaking up with her boyfriend, she decides to escape to a random town in England by swapping houses with Iris (Kate), a columnist who desperately wants to move on from her ex. Shortly after arriving in England, Amanda meets Graham (Jude), Iris' brother, a single father; and Iris gets to know Miles, a composer Amanda works with.
Serendipity
Starring: Kate Beckinsale, John Cusack
Plot: While Christmas shopping, fate brings Sara (Kate) and Jonathan (John) when they both reach for the same pair of gloves at a department store. Instantly hitting it off, they let fate decide if they should actually be together. Years later, they look for signs to see if they're meant to meet again.
The Family Stone
Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Diane Keaton, Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes
Plot: Everett (Dermot) brings his traditional, slightly uptight girlfriend Meredith (Sarah) home to his quirky family, and things don't exactly go as planned. Feeling out of place, Meredith asks her sister Julie (Claire) to come, which surprise surprise, further complicates things. On top of that, a big family secret is revealed and changes their lives forever.
You've Got Mail
Starring: Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks
Plot: Both in the book business, Joe (Tom), the owner of a bookstore chain, and Kathleen (Meg), the owner of a cute little bookshop, meet online by chance. What started as an innocent conversation turns into something more. Unfortunately, the two are unaware that they're actually rivals IRL.
Bridget Jones's Diary
Starring: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant
Plot: Determined to ~change~ her ways and turn her life around, Bridget (Renée) documents her resolutions and progress in a diary. As someone who's been single for a long time, she's surprised when she meets two eligible bachelors who fights for her love.
When Harry Met Sally
Starring: Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal
Plot: Two acquaintances who went to the same college decide to drive to New York together, and they realize that they practically have nothing in common. A few years later, chance encounters bring them together and they eventually become good friends. But could it be something more?
Sleepless In Seattle
Starring: Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, Ross Malinger
Plot: After Sam (Tom) loses his wife Maggie, he and his son Jonah (Ross) move to a different state for a fresh start. One night, Jonah tells a radio station about his dad being lonely, and Annie (Meg) happens to be tuning in. And it was like, magic. ;)
While You Were Sleeping
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman
Plot: Lucy (Sandra), a lonely MRT station worker, saves her long-time crush's life. At the hospital, the doctors inform his family that he is in a coma, and a misunderstanding causes them to believe that Lucy is his fiance. As she gets to know his family, things become complicated when she starts falling for his brother, Jack (Bill).
