  • Brad Pitt opened up about his struggles with alcohol and past mistakes.
  • He said that at one point, he hadn’t cried in 20 years.

From being a major player in one of the biggest tabloid stories ever to going through a high-profile divorce with Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt has been through a lot in his personal life. While he tends to be pretty quiet about his private life, he just opened up about some of his past mistakes and how he embraces crying after 20 years without a single tear escaping his ducts.

In a published conversation with fellow actor Anthony Hopkins for Interview magazine, Brad said he’s “still wrestling” with the idea of taking the blame. He explained:

“I’m realizing, as a real act of forgiveness for myself for all the choices that I’ve made that I’m not proud of, that I value those missteps because they led to some wisdom, which led to something else. You can’t have one without the other. I see it as something I’m just now getting my arms around at this time in my life. But I certainly don’t feel like I can take credit for any of it.”

Brad didn’t specify what he was talking about, but Anthony prompted him to go into his struggle with alcohol and why he decided to be sober. (Brad was accused of “excessive drinking” as well as physical abuse during his divorce and custody battle with Angelina. He’s now sober and attended AA meetings for a year and a half.) He told the Silence of the Lambs actor, “Well, I just saw it as a disservice to myself, as an escape.”

Talking about his past mistakes, the Ad Astra star said he’s more concerned with how people grow after they mess up. And in order not to get too wrapped up in all the crap he’s done, he has adopted the forgiving “f*ck it” lifestyle or “guiding principle,” as he calls it.

Brad Pitt talks about Angelina Jolie and giving up alcohol.

Although, Brad admits he can still “lose it” at times. While being easy-going is his “gliding speed,” he confessed, “I get sucked into something, and I can lose it. I take my hands off the wheel... I’m human.”

Another revelation from this interview came when Brad shared that he was a “not-crier” for 20 years but doesn’t mind shedding a few tears now that he’s older. He said, “I hadn’t cried in, like, 20 years, and now I find myself, at this later stage, much more moved—moved by my kids, moved by friends, moved by the news. Just moved.” He’s not worried about it though. For him, “It’s a good sign.”
