The Himig Handog 2019 album just dropped, and it features Daniel Padilla and Moira Dela Torre's love song, “Mabagal.” Perfect for slow dancing, the song brings to mind happy memories, according to Moira. “The whole time you listen to the song, nakangiti ka lang. It’s a song that could help young people appreciate slow dancing again.” Daniel said they chose the song written by Dan Tañedo because of its “different flavor.”
The album also features Janella Salvador’s take on “Nung Tayo Pa,” a song written by Rex Torremoro and Elmar Jan Bolaño. Starring in the new teleserye The Killer Bride, Janella didn’t think she’d be able to join Himig Handog this year, but she said the song was too good to pass up. “It really touched me. Ramdam mo ang pain,” she described the song, which was inspired by a conversation that Rex had with an ex-girlfriend. The actress also liked the chords of the song and the challenge of singing in a higher range than her usual.
Alex Gonzaga is another artist featured in the album, interpreting “Please Lang” with sister Toni Gonzaga providing backup vocals. Written by Michael Angelo “Aikee” Aplacador, the upbeat song is for those who are “jowang-jowa na,” said Alex. Just reading the lyrics got her hooked, and she’s certain that many people will be able to relate to the song.
The 12 original songs that made it to the album came from almost 4,000 entries from around the world, according to ABS-CBN. Out of the top 12, the best song will be chosen in an event hosted by the songwriting competition.
