Dating is such a BIG deal for South Korean personalities, so much so that the term "scandal" is used in the country to describe it. Over the years, the public's reception (both in South Korea and internationally) towards news like these have changed and shifted, but one thing remains constant: It never fails to surprise the entertainment world whenever a K-celeb is revealed to be coupled up! News and paparazzi sites have definitely cashed in on this trend too, that it has become a sort of tradition for media outfits like Dispatch Korea to reveal a couple on New Year's Day.
2020 is turning out to be a big month for couples in the Korean entertainment scene with K-pop idols Super Junior's Heechul and EXO's Chen revealing that they both have their individual romantic relationships IRL. Here, we made a rundown of the top dating news that shook South Korea (and the world).
1. Rain and Kim Tae Hee
Dating reveal: 2013
One of Dispatch's first New Year couples is singer-actor Rain and top actress Kim Tae Hee. In 2013, the country was collectively in shock when the news site revealed that they were in a relationship, especially since it was Rain's first public dating news since his debut in 2002. The two got married in a private wedding in 2017 and welcomed their first child, a daughter later in that year. They revealed that another child, also a girl, was on the way in 2019. Tae Hee gave birth to her second child in September 2019.
2. Lee Seung Gi and Girls' Generation's Yoona
Dating Reveal: 2014
Dispatch welcomed 2014 by breaking the news that Girls' Generation's Yoona and actor-singer Lee Seung Gi have been dating for months. Photos of the two were released during one of their car dates, with Dispatch revealing that the two have been going out since 2013. The news was welcomed by both parties' fans, especially since Seung Gi has consistently named Yoona as his ideal woman for years. Unfortunately, the two broke up IN 2015 after almost one year and nine months of dating due to their busy schedules. However, Yoona's agency, SM Entertainment, announced that the two separated ways in friendly terms.
3. JYJ's Junsu and EXID's Hani
Dating reveal: 2016
Dispatch rang in the New Year by revealing that K-pop stars Junsu of JYJ and Hani of EXID have been dating since the last few months of 2015. The pair were first photographed during one of their car dates by the Han River in late 2015. But the two reportedly saw each other consistently a few months before the reveal, with Junsu always picking up Hani after her schedules. The couple, however, confirmed that they broke up later that year, with Hani's former agency citing their busy schedules as the cause of the separation.
4. EXO's Kai and BLACKPINK's Jennie
Dating reveal: 2019
Following tradition, Dispatch turned the K-pop fandom upside down in 2019 after it revealed that top idols Kai of EXO and Jennie of BLACKPINK were dating. The news site revealed photos of the two going on a car date and shared that they have been spending time together since the latter part of 2018. Following the announcement, Kai's agency SM Entertainment confirmed that the two have grown "fond of each other." Their relationship, however, was short-lived since the pair were reported to have broken up on January 25. SM Entertainment did not cite the reason behind this and only confirmed the pair's breakup.
5. Super Junior's Heechul and TWICE's Momo
Dating reveal: 2020
News outlet Market News took the spot of revealing Korea's New Year couple this year after it broke the news that Super Junior's Heechul and TWICE's Momo were officially dating! The same outlet first reported on the rumor last year but both of the stars' agencies denied it. Their companies, however, both confirmed that they were dating this time around, saying that the pair recently started a relationship after getting close as a senior and junior in the industry. Heechul has always been open about being a fan of Momo so many of their fans are very supportive of the two.
6. EXO's Chen and his non-celebrity girlfriend
Dating reveal: 2020
In other dating news, EXO's Chen also revealed that he is going to get married to his non-celebrity girlfriend and that they are expecting a child! The vocalist took everyone by surprise after he posted a personal letter on SM Entertainment's community board saying, "I have a girlfriend, who I want to share the rest of my life with." A source from the company also supposedly confirmed that his fiancee is pregnant, but said that they will not reveal any further details about the situation with respect to her as a private individual. SM Entertainment also released a statement saying that the wedding will be a very private event as requested by both Chen and his bride's family. Congratulations, Chen!
