On September 13, a Filipina and her baby boy were found dead in their home in the neighborhood of Park Avenue in Long Beach, California.
The victims have been identified as Charlene Ventanilla, 36, and her eight-week-old son, Shane.
"It was Charlene's husband Ken who discovered the lifeless bodies of the mother and child," reports the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The Orange County Register notes: "Homicide detectives, wearing protective blue booties over their shoes, interviewed neighbors, and a forensics technician brought out half a dozen large paper evidence bags before officials cleared the scene around 2 p.m. that day."
The Ventanillas, who also have a two-year-old son, were described by their neighbors as "a happy couple." One neighbor added that the Ventanillas sometimes invited their friends to their home for barbecues.
This was why it was quite a shock to everyone when the investigation showed that Charlene stabbed her baby before she took her own life.
Despite the findings, both the police and the family are hoping that someone will come forward and shed light on what triggered Charlene to harm her baby and herself.
All reports about the incident also carry this plea: "Anyone with information that might help the Ventanillas and law enforcement better understand why such a tragedy took place is encouraged to contact detectives of the Long Beach Police Department at (562) 570-7244."
