Wondering what new movies to watch and look forward to in 2021? Viva Films and TinCan Films PH have *prepared* different remakes of Korean films for us—it's always nice to see a movie adaptation with that ~distinct Pinoy~ feel!
1. Miss Granny (2018)
The OG plot: "Complications and hilarity ensue when a 70-year-old woman living unhappily with her son's family is magically restored to her beauty of 50 years earlier." The movie is currently available for streaming on Viu.
The remake: The PH version starred Nova Villa and Sarah Geronimo as a lola "who realizes she is becoming a burden on her family." Through a magical photo booth, she is transformed back to her 20-year-old self! You can watch the remake on iWant TFC.
2. Miracle In Cell No. 7 (2019)
The OG plot: Who didn't cry because of father-daughter duo Yong Gu (Ryu Seung Ryong) and YeSung (Kal So Won)?! In this film, a father with an intellectual disability is wrongfully accused of murdering and abusing a little girl. In prison, his cellmates do everything in their power to help him reunite with his daughter.
3. My Sassy Girl (Coming Soon)
4. A Moment to Remember (Coming Soon)
The OG plot: The 2004 movie stars Jung Woo Sung and Son Ye Jin. In the film, "27-year-old fashion designer Kim Su Jin is betrayed when she finds out her lover is married. She decides to quit fashion and pursue her role as heiress to her dad's construction company, where she meets a familiar handsome face. Choi Chul Soo is a construction site foreman, whom Su Jin then begins to court. Despite their social class differences, they wind up getting married. But fate gets in the way of their happy ending."
The remake: Alden Richards + Bea Alonzo were announced as the remake's leads in December 2020! This is their first-ever film together. The movie will be a co-production between Viva Films and GMA Pictures and will be directed by Nuel Naval.
5. The Housemaid (Coming Soon)
The OG plot: "Eun Yi (Jeon Do Youn) is hired as a nanny in an opulent mansion owned by the wealthy and handsome businessman Hoon Goh (Lee Jung Jae). He wastes no time in seducing his alluring young employee who seemingly has little choice but to comply with his sexual advances. Soon the vengeful women of the family, including a villainous matriarch and a heavily pregnant wife, plot against Eun Yi who must fight an equally devious battle to protect herself."
The remake: In October 2020, Kylie Verzosa announced that she was starring in The Housemaid remake as "Daisy." The film will also star Jaclyn Jose as Madam, "the mayordoma Martha who hates her job," and Albert Martinez as the head of the household.
