Miss Universe Singapore Bernadette Belle Ong has captured the hearts of many Filipinos thanks to her close connection with the Philippines. The 26-year-old beauty queen was actually born in the Philippines and lived here for 10 years!
Though her family migrated to Singapore in 2004 where she built her hosting, modeling, and acting career, Belle kept her soft spot for the country and always grabs the chance to showcase her fluent Tagalog!
On her profile feature in Real_Missology, she credits her rich background for her openness to different cultures.
"Wu-Ong credits living abroad at a young age as having expanded her horizons and given her the ability to relate to a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. She enjoys the creative arts and is training to be a professional Disc Jockey. She speaks English, Tagalog, and conversational Mandarin."
She also shared her fondness for the Filipino community and how it was the main driving force for her to enter the pageant world. "During my time here, I've been able to build a community with Filipinos and having that community, sila yung nagyaya sa akin na, 'O, sige, i-try mo na yung Miss Universe," she said in an interview with Rise and Shine Pilipinas. She also trained online here in the Philippines to prepare for the pageant.
Bernadette was originally supposed to represent Singapore in the Miss Charm pageant in Vietnam. The plan was postponed, however, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, she was approached by the Miss Universe Singapore Organization to represent the country for the 69th Miss Universe!
"Since hindi pa ako naka-compete sa Miss Charm, I was able to do that," she explains.
Bernadette is already on her way to Florida, USA for the pageant event which will happen on May 16.
