Glee star Naya Rivera has been reported missing, after her four-year-old son was found alone on a boat following their trip to a lake in California, officials have said.

The 33-year-old rented a boat at Lake Piru on Wednesday, July 8 in the afternoon, the Ventura County Sheriff's office have confirmed. Officers have said that Rivera and her son Josey then went swimming in the lake, with the child returning to the boat without his mother.

It's thought that Rivera's son was wearing a life jacket but Rivera herself was not, as a life jacket has since been found on the boat, a spokesman has said.

Captain Eric Buschow, a spokesman for Ventura County Sheriff's Department, told reporters that they responded to reports of a boy alone on a boat at around 4:48 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8. However, the search was paused later that evening once it became dark, with the operation continuing today.

Captain Bushow added, "Indications are that we believe she did go in the lake. At this point it's still a search and that's what we know up to this point."

He continued, "We're going on the belief that she did go in the water, and we've not been able to locate her. This may well be a case of drowning."
