While the internet was spiraling last week over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's shocking choice to step back from their senior royal duties, you may have missed that one of your favorite pop stars—Justin Bieber— also shared something big with the world. He let his fans know that he was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease and chronic mono.
Justin shared the news on Instagram, revealing that he's been dealing with the disease in private for a while and explaining that it's the reason people have criticized his looks a lot lately. "While a lot of people kept saying Justin Bieber looks like shit, on meth, etc., they failed to realize I've been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease, not only that but had a serious case of chronic mono, which affected my skin, brain function, energy, and overall health," he wrote.
Justin also added that he will provide his fans with more information on his diagnosis in the YouTube docuseries he's been teasing, saying, "These things will be explained further in a docuseries I'm putting on YouTube shortly...you can learn all that I've been battling and OVERCOMING!! It's been a rough couple years but getting the right treatment that will help treat this so far incurable disease and I will be back and better than ever NO CAP."
But because the internet can be a cruel place, people online started downplaying Justin's diagnosis and joking about it—and some went way over the line by saying Justin "deserves" his Lyme disease diagnosis, which is all kinds of messed up. Naturally, this caused Justin's wife, Hailey Baldwin, to defend him on Twitter.
"For those who are trying to downplay the severity of Lyme disease. Please do your research and listen to the stories of people who have suffered with it for years," she wrote. "Making fun of and belittling a disease you don't understand is never the way, all it takes is educating yourself."
Hailey also took the time to give a special shout-out to the Hadid family, who has been very open about their personal struggles with Lyme disease. "Wanna say a huge thank you to @YolandaHadid and @BellaHadid and @GigiHadid for bringing me so much clarity and information on Lyme disease and for helping answer my questions about [the] course of action, symptoms, etc.," she added. "Love you [three] amazing women!"
Thankfully, it seems like Justin is keeping his spirits high and staying positive with Hailey ahead of his new music releases. Sincerely hoping he's able to conquer this setback in 2020!
