The Long Plot, Sans Spoilers

Most of us know the story of sisters Teddie (Toni Gonzaga), Bobbie (Bea Alonzo), Alex (Angel Locsin), and Gabbie (Shaina Magdayao), and how they try to keep their youngest brother, CJ (Enchong Dee), from marrying a girl he's only known for three months. In the 2013 movie Four Sisters And A Wedding, we saw each sister's pains and struggles, and how everything got resolved eventually.

In Four Sisters Before The Wedding, we are taken 10 years back. Teddie (Charlie Dizon), Bobbie (Alexa Ilacad), and Alex (Gillian Vicencio) are in college, while Gabbie (Belle Mariano) is graduating from high school. We get a glimpse of their family life and, this time, the problem they need to solve is an issue between their parents and their suspicion that their dad has a mistress.

Did You Know?

  1. The original siblings, Toni, Bea, Angel, and Shaina, and Enchong, all have cameos in this prequel!
  2. The Four Sisters prequel is directed by Mae Cruz-Alviar who is also responsible for movies like Unbreakable with Bea Alonzo and Angelica Panganiban, Can't Help Falling In Love with Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, and Everyday I Love You with Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil. The original Four Sisters movie was directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina.
  3. The writer of the prequel, though, also wrote the original Four Sisters film, Vanessa R. Valdez. She is also the screenplay writer of many memorable Pinoy movies such as One More Chance, Miss You Like Crazy, The Mistress, and A Second Chanceall starring John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo; The Love Affair with Bea Alonzo, Richard Gomez, and Dawn Zulueta; Just The Three Of Us with John Lloyd Cruz and Jennylyn Mercado; and most recently, Three Words To Forever with Sharon Cuneta, Richard Gomez, and Kathryn Bernardo.
  4. Alexa and Belle have been acting since they were kids! Alexa started when she was eight, while Belle joined got her first TV role at nine years old. Both were mainstays of Goin' Bulilit and appeared in many other ABS-CBN shows.
  5. Charlie and Gillian, on the other hand, joined showbiz fairly recently. Both have bagged major roles in their young careers through auditioning. Charlie competed with almost 700 other girls for her starring role in Fan Girl, her MMFF movie with Paulo Avelino. Gillian also participated in an open audition for a role in the horror movie, Eerie with Bea.
  6. Another interesting tidbit about Charlie for K-pop fans out there: She passed her audition for a South Korean entertainment company's idol training camp! She almost debuted as the first Filipino member of a K-pop group but had issues with her visa so she had to go home. That disappointment paved the way, though, for her to join Star Magic in 2018.
  7. Four Sisters Before The Wedding can still be streamed on iWant TFC, Cignal PPV, Sky Cable PPV, and KTX.ph until December 31. I watched on iWant and paid P150 for 48-hour access upon purchase!

What I Think:

I wasn't very keen on watching this movie, just because I'm normally cautious about prequels and sequels. I don't want to get disappointed, especially if I have good memories of the first movie. But I decided to watch it, anyway, just to see if the prequel did justice to the original. And I actually think it did!

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the stories from the two films came together. There were a lot of references from the first Four Sisters movie, but not too much that it failed to have its own special flavor. This movie can certainly stand on its own, but it also did its job in helping put together the pieces of the puzzle so we can better understand why Teddie, Bobbie, Alex, and Gabbie were the way they were in the original film.

At the onset, the two standouts for me were Charlie Dizon and Belle Mariano. Charlie was a perfect fit to be the young Teddie. She REALLY got the personality of Toni Gonzaga's Teddie down pat. She was bubbly, funny, and a little rough on the edges. I was also really impressed with Belle because she needed to portray Shaina Magdayao's Gabbie, who was more on the quiet, introverted side. I remember thinking the first movie could have done without the Gabbie character just because she had little impact on the story, but because of this prequel, I appreciate the character better. Belle's acting was subtle but memorable.

It took some time for me to warm up to the characters played by Alexa and Gillian. But they had scenes where I could swear that I saw Bea and Angel in them. They got some of the mannerisms right. For Alexa, I even saw that in a scene where she was not talking at all (she was putting makeup on Gillian's Alex).

Beyond the comparison to the original actors, though, Charlie, Alexa, Gillian, and Belle really showed their talent in this movie. I can't wait to see more of them in future movies and TV projects.

I also have to give a special mention to Carmina Villarroel, Dominic Ochoa, Irma Adlawan, Cai Cortez, Kakai Bautista, and Pinky Amador. These seasoned actors provided very solid support to the four girls. The young actors in this movie—Jameson Blake, Joao Constancia, Jeremiah Lisbo, and Clarence Delgado—also did well in their supporting roles.

Overall, I think this is a good prequel to the original film. There might even be room for a third installment in this series, just to see what happens next.

I'd Recommend It To:

Fans of Four Sisters And A Wedding! In case you haven't seen the original or want to see it again before checking out the prequel, it's on Netflix and on Star Cinema's YouTube channel.
