We bet the twist in the Isa Pa, With Feelings teaser trailer was a real shocker to you! Yeah, I admit I thought it was just going to be another love story about a guy and a girl who cross paths through a meet-cute. That happens in the trailer, of course, but there's one big addition: Carlo Aquino's character Gali is deaf! What's more, he is Mara's (Maine Mendoza) sign language teacher.
Someone who is deaf, according to the World Health Organization, has profound hearing loss, which implies very little or no hearing. People with this condition often use sign language for communication.
If you want to understand the condition more, here are seven movies and TV shows that might just do the trick:
1. Dinig Sana Kita/If I Knew What You Said (2009)
This Filipino movie was part of the 2009 Cinemalaya Film Festival! It tells the love story of a deaf boy named Kiko (Romalito Mallari, who is hearing-impaired in real life) and rocker chick Niña (Zoe Sandejas), who meet at a camp in Baguio! The film's director Mike Sandejas revealed that the movie is partly inspired by Sugarfree's song "Wag Ka Nang Umiyak."
2. A Silent Voice (2016)
In this animated Japanese film, high school student Shoya tries to make amends with a deaf girl named Shoko, whom he used to bully and hate on when they were in elementary school!
3. The Society (2019)
Amongst The Society's ensemble cast is Sam Eliot (Sean Berdy), a kindhearted teenager who also happens to be gay. He communicates primarily through American Sign Language (ASL) and his closest friends in the show learn the language to understand him better!
4. Switched At Birth (2011 to 2017)
Due to a mix-up at the hospital, this TV show's lead characters Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Katie Leclerc) were switched at birth. They find out about their real families as teenagers and end up living together to get to know each other better. Daphne is deaf, the result of getting sick with meningitis when she was just three years old. She goes to a school for deaf students and is part of the basketball team.
5. Hear Me (2009)
According to the film's My Drama List description, this romantic comedy from Taiwan tells the story of Tian Kuo (Eddie Peng), a simple guy who helps out with his family's business, and Yang Yang (Ivy Chen), a deaf girl who is cheering her sister on for the upcoming Deaflympics. It's "like at first sight" for Tian Kuo when he meets Yang Yang at the swimming pool and befriends her. The film's reviews say that 80 percent of the dialogue is in sign language!
6. Drawing: A Maalaala Mo Kaya Episode (2018)
CJ (Nash Aguas) can't hear sounds AND can't speak. He pursues a fine arts course in his dream university but soon realizes that being deaf hinders him from living a normal life and gaining friends. He struggles with college and soon suffers from depression. He is able to pull through, however, with the help of his mom (Eula Valdez).
7. Silenced (2011)
In this movie, Gong Yoo's character starts to work as a teacher for a school for hearing-impaired children. He soon realizes that strange things are happening there, and after investigating with the help of a human rights activist, he uncovers a dark secret: Students are becoming victims of physical and sexual abuse.
