On Saturday, December 12, Jessy Mendiola and Luis Manzano happily announced their engagement with a series of beautiful photos taken while they were celebrating Jessy's 28th birthday in Amanpulo. What should have been a joyous occasion for the couple was marred by an accusation from jewelry company Radiant Lux Jewelry, who announced in a statement that they were the original creators of Jessy's engagement ring. FYI, Jessy and Luis both credited the ring to Manila Diamond Studio in all their social posts.

In an emotional vlog released on Tuesday, December 15, Jessy set the record straight about the issue. She revealed that Luis bought the diamond from Radiant Lux Jewelry back in September 2019—and fully paid for it at that. According to Jessy, Luis chose the company because the owner is a good friend of Jessy. Jessy then disclosed a private matter that happened earlier this year: that she and Luis went through a rough patch and broke up in May—without Luis ever getting the chance to propose to her. At this point, Jessy's engagement ring was still with Radiant Lux Jewelry. This is where the story gets complicated: According to Jessy, her "friend" from Radiant Lux Jewelry showed her her supposed engagement ring, all while Jessy and Luis were still broken up.
"For whatever reason—I don't know kung ano 'yon—she showed me the ring," Jessy detailed. "And she opened the box in front of me knowing na hindi kami ayos ni Luis. And she let me wear the ring. So, can you imagine yung feeling ng isang babae na hindi kayo ayos ng boyfriend mo tapos pinasuot sayo yung ring, na naisip mo, 'What could've been? Kung okay kaya kami ni Luis, magpro-propose kaya siya?' Kailangan ba umabot sa ganitong point na ibang tao yung magsasabi sa akin about the ring?"
She went on to add, "So I was so shocked. Nakita ko yung ring, nasuot ko yung ring, binalik ko sa box, binigay ko sa kanya yung ring box, at sinabi ko sa kanya na, 'I do not want to have to do anything with the ring.' Kumbaga sa akin, tapos na. Ayoko nang pahabain pa. Kung hindi man kami magkabalikan ni Luis, okay na. But hindi ko alam yung intention kung bakit kailangan pang sabihin sa akin na meron pa lang ring."
Jessy shared that she's always dreamt of a traditional proposal and that this milestone was taken away from her and Luis because of her former friend: "So I just want people, bashers, fans, or sa kung sino lang curious kung ano ba ang totoo, eto ang nangyari. Nalaman ko about the ring way before Luis got the chance to propose to me. And nawala sa amin yung feeling na 'yon. Nawala sa amin yung feeling na—yung excitement na luluhod yung lalaki sa harap mo, kinakabahan, hindi niya alam ano sasabihin sa'yo, tapos tatanungin ka niya, 'Will you marry me?' Nawala sa amin 'yon. But Luis and I, we chose to move on from it, we chose to close that chapter, and to move on positively."
Jessy and Luis eventually got back together and were able to get the ring back from Radiant Lux Jewelry. They then decided to have the ring reset by Manila Diamond Studio with additional designs from Jessy herself. The before-and-after photos of the ring were shown in the vlog:
It took Luis a few more months to propose because Jessy needed time to heal from the falling out with her friend. To make up for the traditional engagement they lost because of the whole ring drama, the couple recreated it in their Amanpulo trip via a photo shoot. At this point, the couple had already been engaged for two months! Snippets of their shoot were shown in the video, as well as a Q&A of the couple talking about how they met (in ABS-CBN), when they fell in love (after Luis' birthday party in 2016), when they plan to get married (sometime in 2021), and their video call with Luis' BFF Anne Curtis when they announced their engagement to her (Baby Dahlia made a special appearance in that call). TL;DR: The HowHows are finally happy and doing better than ever as an engaged couple.
