John Lloyd Cruz On Style And Shopping

Like a lot of shopaholics, the box-office king turns to "retail therapy" when he's stressed out.

Over the years, we've seen John Lloyd Cruz mature as an actor. But some people, especially his avid fans, may have also noticed how this 27-year-old actor's taste in fashion has evolved as well.

From wearing loose T-shirts and baggy pants back in his Tabing Ilog days in the early ‘90s, the three-time Box Office King has turned out to be one of the most fasyon local male celebrities today.

At the opening of the new Greenwich branch in TriNoma, Cosmo.ph had a quick chat with the multi-awarded actor, and we got to talk about fashion and his preferred style. Get loads of JLC photos when you launch our gallery by clicking on the "View Gallery" button after the interview.

Why do you love shopping?

For me it’s like an outlet. Totoo ‘yong sinasabi nila na retail therapy, sobrang totoo sa akin ‘yon. Parang lalo na kapag nada-down na ako, feeling mo nafu-frustrate ka na sa dami ng ginagawa mo, you don’t even have time for yourself, parang ang pinakamabilis, pinakamadaling [stress reliever] is you go shopping.

How often do you shop?

Wala, ngayon madalang. Iniisip ko dati parang ang bilis lang for me. ‘Yong time ko noon, sobrang madali. Pero ngayon sobrang hirap [humanap ng oras].

What is your favorite shopping spot?

Well, I like Hong Kong and New York. For me, Barneys New York is the best. Kapag mabilis [lang ako magsho-shopping], Hong Kong is the best.

Do you set a limit when you go shopping?

Wala naman. Depende.

What are your preferred brands of clothing?

Marami naman, both high street and high end. That’s what I do e, I mix them together. Kasi, parang you don’t want to be all high end, top to toe, masyadong mahirap i-maintain. It’s nice to have pieces na hindi naman gano’n kamahal pero trendy.

Who's your favorite designer?

Si Joey Samson used to do my suits. Ngayon kasi I have Rex Atienza as my stylist, parang lahat madali na.

Do you always follow your stylist?

Ay, hindi. Ang styling naman is a collaboration. Hindi naman siya dini-dictate ng stylist or no’ng subject. Kasi, kung gano’n, hindi n'yo na kailangan ang isa’t isa.

Do you follow the latest trends in fashion?

Now, parang kung may bagong trend man, I’m not gonna follow the latest trend if I’m not comfortable with it. You know, ‘yong [ibang] cut ng pantalon, ‘yong silhouette ng look. Parang if it’s something na hindi ka kumportable [to] wear, [I don't wear it].

So you don't feel pressured to follow a trend, whenever a new one comes out?

Hindi, kasi naman feeling ko at my age, parang comfortable na ako with what I have, with what I know, and with my choices.

Who is your fashion icon?

Wala akong fashion icon. Iba-iba [ang sinusundan ko] kasi siyempre, hindi naman lahat ng collection nila magugustuhan mo. Ako, I follow what I want, I wear what I’m comfortable wearing. Parang pinaka-core pa rin, when I assessed my fashion style, parang it’s still comfort before fashion. Gusto ko pa rin maging sunod sa trend pero huwag masyadong outrageous, parang hindi ko naman kaya.

How would you describe your style?

Super laid back. May pagka-laid back. There’s nothing trendy naman about cropped pants, it’s been there [like] loafers, slip-ons, and classic shirts.
