Nike Cuts Ties With Maria Sharapova After Failing Drug Test

Due to a banned drug called Meldonium.

US sports apparel brand Nike has severed its ties with yet another of their elite athletes, this time Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova, who is distinguished for being a five-time Grand Slam champion, was dropped by Nike after she failed a drug test for the Australian Open, Business Standard reported.

The 28-year-old athlete tested positive for meldonium after giving a sample on January 26. Meldonium reportedly improves performance by enhancing athlete’s endurance and stamina.

However, it was only added to the list of banned drugs this year. Sharapova has been taking meldonium as a prescription drug for ten years now due to a health condition.

Still, she insisted that it was her fault for not closely checking the list of banned substances. She also apologized to her fans whom she said she let down.

Sharapova, who will be banned from tennis for at least a year starting March 12, said she didn’t want her career to end in this note.

Earlier, Nike cut ties with Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao after he stirred an international firestorm over his comments against same sex marriage.
