Have you ever wondered where your fave K-drama actors and actresses went for their college degrees? We're already familiar with popular secondary schools—mostly for K-pop idols—such as the School Of Performing Arts Seoul (SOPA), Hanlim Arts School, and Lila Art High School. But where did our K-drama faves spend their college days? Do they always study theater or film, or did they pursue other interests before acting?
Below is a list of popular universities and the notable Hallyu stars who studied there:
1. Seoul National University
Hi Bye, Mama!'s Kim Tae Hee graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor's degree in fashion and design. Meanwhile, actress, musician, and beauty pageant titleholder Honey Lee studied music in SNU. Actor Lee Soon Jae, whom we often see in dramas as the appa or grandpa, is also an alumnus.
SNU is dubbed as the "Harvard of Korea" because it's one of the most prestigious and hardest schools to get into. Founded in 1946, SNU has three campuses: Gwanak Main Campus, Yeongeon Medical Campus, and Pyeongchang Campus. As of 2019, it has ranked 11th in the QS Asia University Rankings and 37th in the world.
2. Sungkyunkwan University
Song Joong Ki entered Sungkyunkwan University in 2005 and studied Business Administration. What's so cute about this is Joong Ki later starred in the show Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2010) as a student during the Joseon Dynasty! Another popular actor who studied here is Cha Eun Woo, who entered the university in 2016 as a performing arts student. Actresses Moon Geun Young, Ku Hye Sun, and Seo Ji Hye are also part of the school's alumni.
According to the school's official website, Sungkyunkwan University was founded at the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty in 1398, which makes it the oldest university in East Asia. It offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses for local and international students.
3. Dankook University
Some of this university's most notable alumni are Ji Chang Wook, who was admitted to the School of Performing Arts in 2006; Woo Do Hwan, who graduated in 2016 and majored in performance and film; Ha Ji Won, Park Bo Young, and many more! Rain also took his master's degree in musical theater at Dankook. DKU was founded in 1947 and has two campuses: one in Jukjeon and one in Cheonan.
4. Myongji University
According to Soompi, Park Bo Gum entered Myongji University in 2014 as a musical theater major and he graduated in 2018. During his stay there, he participated in the senior graduation musical Hairspray as the show's music director. Hospital Playlist star Jeon Mi Do, who was already a famous theater actress before starring in the medical drama, reportedly studied in Myongji as well.
Myongji is a private Christian institution that was founded in 1956. It has two campuses: the Social Science Campus is located in Seoul and the Natural Science Campus is in Yongin. Fun fact: The university has a Department Of Baduk Studies, which aims to promote pursue an academic study of the game. Bo Gum's character in Reply 1988 was a genius Go Game/Baduk master!
5. Hanyang University
Kim So Hyun was admitted to Hanyang University in 2018 as a student in the Department of Film and Theater! Her The Tale Of Nokdu co-star Jang Dong Yoon also entered the university in 2011 and studied under the Department of Economy and Finance. Other notable alumni include Jung Il Woo, Jang Keun Suk (Theater And Cinema), and Lee Ye Young Ae (German Language And Literature).
Hanyang University is a private research university in South Korea. The main campus is in Seoul, and the second one, the Education Research Industry Cluster, is located in Ansan. Hanyang University established South Korea's first engineering institute in 1939 as well as the country's first school of architecture and civil engineering.
6. Kyung Hee University
This is where our goblin Gong Yoo majored in theater! This private university is famous for having multiple alumni who are now idols such as Rain and CNBLUE's Jung Yong Hwa. Kyung Hee has several physical locations, plus the online Kyung Hee Cyber University (KHCU).
