At the end of 2020, Netflix announced that the hit series Money Heist is getting a Korean remake. A few months later, they announced the star-studded cast, with Yoo Ji Tae as the Professor. Fans can also look forward to Park Hae Soo (Berlin), Jeon Jong Seo (Tokyo), Lee Won Jong (Moscow), Kim Ji Hoon (Denver), Jang Yoon Joo (Nairobi), Kim Ji Hoon (1979) (Helsinki), and Lee Kyu Ho (Oslo). The character of Rio was supposed to be brought to life by Park Jung Woo but due to scheduling conflicts, actor Lee Hyun Woo has stepped in to fill the role.

The remake, titled Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area, is set to premiere in 2022, though an exact date has yet to be announced. So while we're all eagerly waiting for the series, let's get to know Lee Hyun Woo a little bit more, shall we?

Fun facts about actor Lee Hyun Woo:

  1. He was born on March 23, 1993.
As an Aries, he is an "initiator, trendsetter, and born leader. Bursting with energy, they charge forward through life with a lot of daring, but are also known for acting on impulse." Whether they're new to the team or a long-time boss, Aries isn't afraid of stepping up, which is why we're extra excited for him to portray Rio in Money Heist: Korea.

  2. He started his career as a child actor.
Hyun Woo first appeared in Oolla Boolla Blue Jjang in 2004 and has accepted many historical roles after. It wasn't until 2012 that his career started to bloom, thanks to his role in To The Beautiful You. It's reported that the drama wasn’t that popular in South Korea but did well in other Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and China. The following year, he played a North Korean spy disguised as a high school student in the movie Secretly Greatly. The movie was a commercial success, plus, he starred alongside seasoned actors like Kim Soo Hyun, Park Ki Woong, and Son Hyun Joo. Hyun Woo has also been in Northern Limit Line, The Beauty Inside, Moorim School, and The Liar And His Lover.

  3. He and IU were caught up in dating rumors in 2013.
Photos of the stars were uploaded to an online community when they were seen catching a movie together. Their agencies immediately denied the rumor, stating that their managers were also there and that the two are just "good friends." Hyun Woo didn't expect the hangout to be such an issue, so when his phone was blowing up on his way home, he was very surprised.

They were introduced by T-ara's Jiyeon after she gave him IU's phone number. Jiyeon wanted all her friends to get along—especially because they were the same age. He eventually became IU's leading man in the music video of her song "You And I."

During a guest appearance in SBS' Strong Heart, Hyun Woo talked about what filming the music video was like, revealing that they had to cut a scene out: "When IU spotted me on the filming set, she greeted me with a big welcoming smile and approached me first. But I felt extremely awkward and started using extremely polite language as if I was talking to an elderly person. Things got really awkward really quickly after that point. I couldn't even act right. There was a scene where I had to hug IU from behind her, but it looked just way too awkward and uncomfortable that they had to delete that scene." Aww!

It couldn't have been that bad, though, 'cause they reunited in the music video for "Above The Time."

  4. Hyun Woo had his *first* fan meeting in 2018.
Held in Seoul, the fan meeting was a temporary goodbye to his fans as he was about to enlist. The whole thing lasted three hours and they took a trip down memory lane, answering fan questions about his previous roles. It also felt like a mini-concert because he wowed the audience with his vocal skills after singing several songs like "Your Face" and "Waiting For You."

His hyungs, Park Seo Joon and Woo Do Hwan, graced the audience with their presence as they showed their support for the young actor. His parting message was, "Although I'm still lacking in many ways, I'm going to work hard to grow and mature [as an actor], so that I can show all of you a positive vibe. So I ask that you please continue to keep an eye on me. I will greet you again in the future as a cooler version of myself.”

  5. He enlisted on February 19, 2018.
So yes, this means he has successfully completed his mandatory enlistment (and we don’t have to miss him too much anymore, huhu).

In an interview, he revealed that he got a lot of advice from Park Seo Joon as well as Kim Soo Hyun, who was also in the military at the time. Before enlisting, he slept well and enjoyed his last meal—bulgogi and short rib soup. Plus, he hung out with close friends UNIQ's Sungjoo and Seungyoun, Dean, and Lee Seo Won:

He told bnt News, "At the time, he was really friendly to me, and even said that he enjoyed watching Blind. I'm really grateful that he reached out to me first, even though he was the sunbae (older in seniority). He's a sunbae and a friend that I am thankful for."

  7. Hyun Woo has an eclectic taste in music.
Describing himself as "emotional", he used to prefer "calm rap or melodies" until he discovered Kiss Ape. "My music preference changed. Their crowd is divided into those who really like it and those who complain it's too loud but I like it so that's why I listen to it," he said in an interview. "I always listen to BIGBANG and I've been taking rap lessons lately. My teacher and I always look up foreign videos. I have to start writing my rap lyrics, too."

  8. He will be starring in Park Seo Joon and IU's movie, Dream.
Seo Joon will portray Yoon Hong Dae, a professional soccer player who ends up as a coach, and Hyun Woo will bring to life In Sun, one of the players on the team.
