It's been three days since news of Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse's breakup hit, and the details of their messy split keep flowing. Turns out, Cole is the one who broke up with her, astrology played a major role, and their body language at Comic-Con was so off. And in a just-published interview with W magazine, things got even more awkward when they insisted on being interviewed separately and had to talk about what would happen if their Riverdale characters broke up.
The article starts out with the writer pointing out how Lili and Cole, who are normally fine with being interviewed together, didn't want to do that this time around. Whether that was the writing on the wall is up for debate. For what it's worth, the writer, David Amsden, had "suspicions" that they were probably uncertain about their future. But here's what Lili had to say about it:
"We're not fighting with the idea that people group us together, but we are paired up a lot. We're acknowledging that we're in a relationship, but it's a small part of who we are as people. We want our own separate identities."
And Cole added, "Lili is an incredibly talented individual who speaks for herself and deserves her own voice box in every single way. That alone is justification enough for me to do it like this."
Lili also explained why she kept their relationship so private—with the exception of their mushy Instagram posts—in the first place. She said:
"At first, I didn't want things private. Now that I'm X amount of years in, I do appreciate the privacy we have, that he's encouraged me to take. No one knows how long we've been together, and no one will until we're ready to say it. No one knows how we fell in love, except for our close friends and us. It's really special."
As for what's going to happen with Riverdale and their loved-up Betty and Jughead characters, Cole admitted that it was fun and interesting for the audience to see them together onscreen, but their IRL happiness is their main priority.
Lili concluded, "If and when we break up on the show, I don't know. It's weird being with an actor. You deal with shit no one has to deal with."
Welp, that's the latest update in Lili-Cole world, and it was a doozy.
