Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao who is usually soft-spoken on controversial issues has affirmed his stand on same sex marriage by blasting the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community in an uncharacteristic move.
In an interview with senatorial candidates in TV-5’s Bilang Pilipino 2016, Pacquiao shared his thoughts on why he strongly disapproved of same sex marriage in the country.
“Ginawa ang babae para sa lalaki. Ginawa ang lalaki para sa babae,” he began.
But Pacquiao’s harmless statement quickly becomes awry after he disses the LGBT community.
"Common sense lang. Makakita ka ba ng any animals na lalaki sa lalaki o babae sa babae?" he asked.
(Editors' Note: Actually, according to the BBC and Yale Scientific, homosexual behavior has been documented in over 450 different animal species worldwide.)
"Mas mabuti pa ‘yung hayop," he says, adding, "Marunong kumilala kung lalaki ang lalaki o babae kung babae."
Pacquiao punctuated his statement by saying how people seeking same sex marriages were worse than animals.
"Ngayon kung lalaki sa lalaki o babae sa babae eh mas masahol pa sa hayop ang tao," he said in apparent disgust.
Pacquiao is currently seeking a seat in Senate under the banner of Vice President Jejomar Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance party.
Other senatorial candidates interviewed in the same segment were former senator Panfilo Lacson, Valenzuela Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian and former interior secretary Raffy Alunan. Only Alunan was in favor of same sex marriage.
