Mark Anthony Fernandez: Still Making Us Swoon After All These Years

The erstwhile Gwapings heartthrob, now all grown up as Darna's leading man, talks love with Cosmo.
mcs_markanthonyfernandez_main.jpgMark Anthony Fernandez sure knows how to make a comeback. After dancing his way into girls’ hearts as a member of teen heartthrobs Gwapings (admit it, your once teenage heart still beats for them!), he dropped out of the radar due to his personal battle with drugs.

But now he’s back in fine form, snagging lead roles in GMA-7’s primetime programs, the latest of which is Eduardo in the network's new adaptation of Darna. He may not be the brooding bad boy he used to be, but to us, he’s still sexy as hell.

How do you spend your free time?

I spend it working out. For the past three years, I've been thinking [that I’d like] to read, too.

What part of your body do you like to work out most?

My abs—because I think I can do [better] there and I enjoy doing the workout.

How do you unwind?

Sports, recreational things, just watching movies. Sometimes I read [my wife] a book. I think that will be effective in a relationship. You tell the person the things you know or basta converse about things. I think that’s the best secret also. Ito tingin ko talagang fact na ‘to, [having] open communication.

Besides love and communication, what else is needed to make a relationship work?

Sa tingin ko lang ha—‘yun tingin ko lang pwedeng mababaw o pwede ‘yung tingin ko irrelevant, pwedeng it might not even work—pero sa tingin ko lang you both have to be athletic. I’m not sure if it will work for everyone. Theory ko lang ‘yun.

What do you love about being married?

When you’re in a relationship for me, it’s like you're in the zone. You can do virtually anything when you're in love, for me.

What advice would you give women about men?

[Dapat] malawak ang pag-iisip [ninyo]. Open your mind. You gotta have an open mind and know that love is virtue. Love is knowledge. Love is philosophy. And when you know that, somewhere, you'll go right.
