Meghan Markle gave her first speech of the royal tour yesterday, and in it, she spoke about how important it was for her to get an education, and for girls around the world to do the same. She also revealed that she paid for school all by herself.

“As a university graduate, I know the personal feeling of pride and excitement that comes with attending university,” she began.

“From the moment you receive your acceptance letter to the exams you spend countless late nights studying for...the journey of higher education is an incredible, impactful, and pivotal one. I am also fully aware of the challenges of being able to afford this level of schooling for many people around the world, myself included.”

Meghan went to Northwestern University, and her half-brother told the Daily Mail before she got married that her dad won the lottery at one point, which is what paid for Meghan's tuition. Meghan, however, seemed to have a different take on the situation.

“It was through scholarships, financial aid programs, and work-study where my earnings from a job on campus went directly towards my tuition, that I was able to attend university. And, without question, it was worth every effort,” she concluded.

She said that it's especially vital for girls in developing countries to have access to education, because it's the best way to ensure they can create a life for themselves.

“Everyone should be afforded the opportunity to receive the education they want, but more importantly, the education they have the right to receive. And for women and girls in developing countries, this is vital," she said.
