Update as of August 5, 2020: After multiple delays, Disney has announced that Mulan will be coming to Disney+—for an additional fee of $29.99 (around P1,471)—next month! According to CNN, Disney clarified that the film will still be released in theaters in countries where Disney+ is not available.
The live-action Mulan film held its official premiere night on March 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. It was supposed to hit theaters on March 27, but a few hours ago, Disney officially announced that it won't push through because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A statement from Mulan director Niki Caro reads: "We are so excited to share this film with the world, but given the current ever-shifting circumstances we are all experiencing, unfortunately, we have to postpone the worldwide release of Mulan for now."
"Our hearts are with everyone the world over who is affected by the virus, and we hope that Mulan's fighting spirit will continue to inspire those who are working so hard to keep us all safe. Thank you for all your enthusiasm and support, and I can't wait for the day where we all get to experience this tale of a girl warrior who became a legend together."
Mulan, which stars Liu Yifei, is the latest live-action adaptation from Disney. It is based on the 1998 animated musical film and tells the story of a Chinese girl who bravely goes to battle in her father's place.
In August, #BoycottMulan was a trending topic on Twitter after lead actress Liu Yifei sparked outrage when she supported the Hong Kong Police Force on social media. At that time, the Hong Kong Police Force was accused of brutality for throwing tear gas at protesters and beating them with batons.
