Majority of our favorite K-dramas almost always has an ahjumma (something like a Korean version of your titas of Manila). Aside from the main characters, these roles add more appeal to the story and keep viewers coming back for more. If you've watched a good number of K-dramas already, you probably have a few actresses in mind whenever you hear the word ahjumma, and we're guessing one of them is Kim Sun Young.
ICYMI, she actually won Best Supporting Actress at the 2020 Baeksang Arts Awards for her role in Crash Landing On You. A well-deserved win considering how she made us hate and love her character all throughout the drama!
If you're in need of more of Kim Sun Young's versatile acting—she's taken on roles from a simple villager to a rich, snotty museum art director—you'll be glad to know she's been in a lot of dramas. In 2019 alone, she appeared in a whopping six K-dramas! Scroll down for five must-watch K-dramas featuring the award-winning actress:
1. Crash Landing On You
Role: Na Wol Sook
A village leader and a member of the North Korean village ahjummas that Se Ri (Son Ye Jin) came to love, Na Wol Sook was the role that gave Kim Sun Young her most recent Best Supporting Actress award. If it weren't for her and her tita squad, CLOY would honestly be less endearing and enjoyable for viewers.
2. Her Private Life
Role: Uhm So Hye
In Her Private Life, Kim Sun Young plays a snooty socialite who used to be the art director of a museum where the protagonist, Deok Mi (Park Min Young), works. She'll make you feel all sorts of things—from outright hatred to much-needed laughter.
3. Reply 1988
Role: Kim Sun Young
Yup, she's also in one of the most loved K-drama series! In Reply 1988, Kim Sun Young's role is the mother of Sun Woo (Go Kyung Pyo). And yes, her character's name is the same as her name IRL.
4. Vagabond
Role: Gye Sun Ja
She may only have appeared in a couple of episodes, but her role in Vagabond is still a pretty cool one! She plays a simple restaurant owner who actually doubles as a secret agent. She helps out the people at NIS with really cool secret agent things while serving nakakatakam na chicken at the side.
5. When The Camellia Blooms
Role: Park Chan Sook
Kim Sun Young plays one of the resident ahjummas in a fictional town called Ongsan, where the lead character Oh Dong Baek (Gong Hyo Jin), a single mom, puts up a bar called Camellia. Aside from getting to see Kim Sun Young play another ahjumma role yet again, When The Camellia Blooms is a refreshing drama to watch—it's not set in the busy city of Seoul, for one). It also snagged the Daesang at this year's Baeksang Arts Awards!
6. Backstreet Rookie
Role: Gong Boon Hee
In this slightly ~controversial~ drama, she plays the mom of Ji Chang Wook's character Choi Dae Hyun! Their family owns a convenience store where plucky Saet Byul (Kim Yoo Jung) works as a part-timer.
BONUS: Hospital Playlist
Role: A patient at Yulje Medical Center
She appeared in Episode 7 of the show with her Reply 1988 co-star Choi Moo Sung! She even tells Doctor Lee Ik Jun (Jo Jung Suk) that he's exactly her type and that "My husband is a slug. He has a shop in Ssangmun-dong. It's called Phoenix Shop."
