WATCH: This Pinoy Collector Shares His Longtime Love For Paper Dolls
Jimpy, 25, has been fascinated with local showbiz ever since he was a kid. But interestingly enough, his love for artistas was a way for him to discover something new: paper dolls! When he was in grade school, Jimpy chanced upon these cut-out figures during a visit to a sari-sari store. "Ang nakalagay doon, Teen Star. Hindi ko siya makalimutan," he tells Cosmopolitan. "Purple 'yon, flower yung background. Tapos ang mukha na nakadikit doon sa katawan, si Vina Morales. Sabi ko, uy artista."
At that time, he was just attracted to how they looked but didn't know what they were at first: "Talagang nag-wonder ako, bakit ganito? Tapos tinuro sa akin ng tita ko, 'Ay ganyan 'yan, dinadamitan 'yan.' Tapos after noon, parang doon na nag-start. Okay, may interest tayo sa paper dolls."
From then on, he'd receive paper dolls as gifts from family and amassed more paper dolls of even more artistas—like Claudine Barretto, Nadine Samonte, and Cristine Reyes. One fun story he has was when created a paper dolls ~pageant~ of his collection, complete with awards and a souvenir program! Jimpy recalls, "2008 'yon, that was the peak of my paper doll collection addiction. Iyon yung time rin na super love ko yung America's Next Top Model. Tapos uso din noon yung mga pageant sa school. So gumawa ako ng version ko. Miss Paper Doll 2008. Tapos may pa-invitation. Tapos may mga awards! O, pageant proper, casual wear, formal attire, nakakatawa."
Although he isn't an active paper dolls collector anymore, Jimpy does feel a sense of nostalgia when he comes across them from time to time. "Whenever I see one sa mall, naaano pa rin ako, yung mayroon pa ring feeling na I want to buy. Last Christmas medyo na-feel lang natin na magbalik-loob sa mga pag-collect," he says.
