The final scene of season two ended with Joe peering through his fence and watching his neighbor read a book. As he looked on, he said: "This is just the beginning. Because this is where I had to be exactly where I had to be to meet You.
"There you were with your books and your sunshine, so close but worlds away. I will figure out a way. A way to get to you. See you soon, neighbor."
The scene left some viewers convinced that the neighbor is, in fact, Joe's estranged mom sunbathing on the other side of the fence. A fan wrote on Twitter: "100% Joe's new neighbor is his mom, she moved and started a new family I'm sure of it."
However, Penn, who is also known for playing Dan Humphrey on Gossip Girl, has since put the theory to bed by confirming it's "definitely" not his mom. In an interview with Bustle, he said: "She's definitely not his mom. I can say that." Thanks for that, Penn!
Penn previously spilled on what he thought Joe's future could consist of.
"I think he deserves something better now, you know? Like I'm not sure that that's possible," the 33-year-old actor told Entertainment Tonight. "What does Joe need? Joe needs, ugh, Joe needs justice, but what does that mean? Does that mean prison? Does that mean death? I don't know."
While in an interview with Cosmopolitan UK, You co-creator Sera Gamble revealed she already has big plans in mind for Joe in a potential Season 3.
"I will say that we have an idea for season three that is SO exciting that people talk about it in the [writer's] room every day," Sera explained. "So my fingers are crossed...I'll just say, I hope we get the chance to keep making the show."
