*June 2021 Update*
You guys, a My Sassy Girl adaptation is really happening—and the movie's almost complete! The OG 2001 movie, which starred Korean actors Jun Ji Hyun and Cha Tae Hyun, is arguably one of the *best* romantic comedy movies out there. Here's everything we know about the PH remake (so far):
What's the OG plot of My Sassy Girl?
A college student named Gyun Woo (Chae Tae Hyun) becomes involved with "The Girl" (Jun Ji Hyun) after saving her from getting hit by a train. The ~sassy~ girl slowly becomes more present in his life, and he soon falls in love with her! Together, they experience love...and heartbreak. If you're planning to watch (or rewatch) the OG film, please prepare lots of tissue!
In 2016, the two leads reunited when Cha Tae Hyun made a special appearance in Jun Ji Hyun's drama Legend Of The Blue Sea. In an interview, the actor shared: "It had been a while since we were in the same shot for that long. I thought we would never be able to meet again since our impact in My Sassy Girl was so big, but we finally met after 10 years."
Who's in the cast?
Toni Gonzaga (The Girl)
TinCan Films made the announcement on January 21 by posting stills of Toni as the movie's female lead! "In celebration of its 20th Anniversary, this year we will relive the classic Korean rom-com with its Philippine adaptation. On her birthday, we are proud to announce Toni Gonzaga is [the] Philippines' My Sassy Girl."
In a vlog released on January 21, Toni talked about the project, saying: "First time ko napanood yung pelikula, 2006, when we were shooting You Are The One. 'Di ko makakalimutan 'yon, nasa Pampanga kami. Sabi ni Direk Cathy, "panoorin mo yung My Sassy Girl. 'Yan ang peg namin sa'yo. Dapat ganyan ka, may pagka-feisty, ganyan.' So 20 years after the film was released, I'm given the opportunity to play the role here in the Philippines...I consider it as a big blessing."
Here's a photo of Toni from a flashback scene:
TinCan Films also posted first look photos of Pepe Herrera as the film's leading man, aka "the guy who will tell Sassy Girl's story." We also spotted him in Toni's vlog! Pepe's recent projects, which are actually comedies, include Sakaling Hindi Makarating (2016), Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap (2018), and The Hopeful Romantic (2018). You can read more about him here.
On January 21, the actor posted a photo of Toni from the My Sassy Girl set, writing in the caption: "Bago matapos ang gabi, isang mainit na pagbati ang aking pinapaabot para sa pagkasilang ng isang magandang puso at isip sa katauhan mo Tin. Kahit sa larawang ito, nag-iisip ka yata ng makakapagpaganda lalo ng mundo. Second pic: I checked [the] definition of 'sassy' randomly. Ganda ng result. Meant to be. Cheers Madam! Cheers to the boundless possibilities from God for you. Maligayang bati."
What other movies has TinCan Films produced?
TinCan Films was actually established by Toni Gonzaga as a producer in 2018. According to its official website, it has produced Mary, Marry Me (2018) and Love The Way U Lie (2020).
Want more trivia? As part of the My Sassy Girl "deal," Toni might get to meet the movie's OG stars! "Part din ng deal doon sa franchise—and I'm praying it will happen—we will go to Korea and meet the original cast. So sana matuloy 'yon," Toni shared in April 2021.
Are there other adaptations of My Sassy Girl?
Yup, a US remake was released in 2008 and it starred Elisha Cuthbert and Jesse Bradford. The 2001 movie also inspired the Korean historical TV series My Sassy Girl in 2017.
When is the release date of the PH My Sassy Girl?
The movie is directed by Fifth Solomon and as of this writing, we don't have an exact release date yet. At the end of her birthday vlog in January, Toni said that her wish is for My Sassy Girl to be shown in cinemas. On June 9, 2021, the offish account of TinCan Films tweeted that dubbing for the movie is finished, so we're crossing our fingers it'll be released in the next months!
