Mayon is known around the world as the perfectly coned volcano from the Philippines, but what most people often forget is that it is still an active volcano.

And shit’s about to get real.

As early as July, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) noticed that the “sulfur oxide emission from [Mayon’s] crater has consistently increased,” going “beyond the baseline level of 500 tonnes a day” and on some days, even past 1,000 tonnes! Furthermore, Phivolcs reported, “results of precise leveling and electronic distance surveys on the last week of August 2016 indicate inflation of the edifice, possibly due to magma movement at depth.”

On Thursday, September 8, Mayon’s alert level went from 0 to 1. On top of that, from August 3 to 6, they “recorded a total of 146 earthquakes.” Though there hasn’t been any indication of imminent danger, Phivolcs reminded people to avoid entering Mayon’s danger zone. Those who live “in valleys and active river channels are cautioned to remain vigilant against sediment-laden streamflows and lahars in the event of prolonged and heavy rainfall.”
