- Prince Harry was reportedly worried that Meghan Markle would have a "meltdown" if they stayed in England and rushed plans to step down from their royal roles.
- The couple now plans to split their time between the U.K. and North America.
Obviously, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to step down is a HUGE frickin' deal. It's an unprecedented move for a royal, and it's going to take a lot of work for the palace staff/royal family to figure out what Harry and Meghan's new role will look like.
That said, it's not like Harry and Meghan would have made the choice to step down without good reasons. And now it's being reported that that one of those reasons is because Meghan was very unhappy in England. According to The Sun, Harry and Meghan "fast-tracked" plans to step down because he was concerned that Meghan was "on the brink" with life at the palace. A source shared:
"The statement was rushed out and part of the reason for that is that Harry knew he needed to take swift action. Meghan has not settled in the U.K. and he knows that and wants her to be happy... He feared staying in the U.K. too long would lead to Meghan having a meltdown."
And while we might never know if that's what actually happened, it does echo sentiments from Harry's friend JJ Chalmers, who said that Harry stepped down in order to "protect" Meghan and their son Archie. Harry's other friend Tom Bradby also shared that Harry and Meghan stepped down due to "really bad personal splits" and because they felt like they were being "driven out" of the royal family anyway.
Meghan is currently in Canada with Archie and her dogs, so hopefully, she's in a better mental place.
