Musical numbers on top of moving trains? Over-the-top dialogue? Super dramatic—but happy—endings? These are just some of the things that make Bollywood movies so special! India has the LARGEST film industry in the whole world, and the country produces "between 1,500 and 2,000 movies a year across 20 languages." Bollywood is the Hindi-language sector of India's movie-making industry.
Thanks to Netflix, we've finally been able to watch lots of Bollywood movies *legally*. If you're super new to the genre, we prepped a list of rom-com movies that are available on the streaming platform, and a lot of them star Shah Rukh Khan, the "King Of Bollywood!" While there are some ~problematic~ characters (no one's perfect, LOL), especially in the older movies, these stories are definitely worth your time—and tears.
1. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Something Something Happens)
It stars: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji
Imagine this: A little girl who was raised by a single father sets out to fulfill her mother's dying wish—to reunite him with his college best friend Anjali! However, our little matchmaker has one *tiny* problem: Anjali is already engaged to someone else.
2. Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na (Whether You Know Or Not)
It stars: Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza
This movie deserves a spot on our list because of its adorable storyline: Two college best friends are convinced they don't have any ~romantic feelings~ for each other...but their family and friends know better. It takes them years to acknowledge it! The film reminds me of the 1998 Pinoy film Labs Kita...Okey Ka Lang?
3. 2 States
It stars: Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor
"Two graduate students hope to win their parents' approval before they marry, but the two families clash over their cultural differences." It's based on a 2009 novel called 2 States: The Story Of My Marriage, and shows how cultural differences and prejudice test a couple's relationship.
4. Dilwale (The Big-Hearted)
It stars: Sha Rukh Khan and Kajol
In their much-awaited reunion film, the love team star as Raj and Meera, two people who fall in love but who are torn apart because of their families. They meet again many years later and are given a second chance. This film got mixed reviews for being super "cliche," it's definitely worth watching for fans of the love team!
5. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (Sometimes There Is Joy, Sometimes There Is Sorrow...)
It stars: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and Kareena Kapoor
Try this film if you're looking for romance + intense family drama! The rich Raichand family (they're kind of billionaires, actually) is torn apart when the eldest son insists on being with the love of his life, a woman who happens to come from a poor family.
6. Jab We Met (When We Met)
It stars: Shahid Kapoor and Karina Kapoor
A *chatterbox* called Geet meets a depressed businessman named Aditya on "an overnight train to Delhi." After they get stranded together, he accompanies her to her home and even helps her elope with her boyfriend. Fun fact: At the time of filming, the lead stars were actually dating!
7. Tamasha (Spectacle)
It stars: Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone
Watch this film if you're looking for a not-so-typical love story. Two strangers meet while on vacation in Corsica. They're obviously attracted to each other, but they decide to keep their real identities a secret.
8. Om Shanti Om (Om, Shanti, And Om)
It stars: Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone
Do you believe in reincarnation? An aspiring actor who died 30 years ago is given a new life, and he's determined to punish the person who caused his death. This film was actress Deepika Padukone's Bollywood debut and she was only 20 years old when the film was created!
9. Kal Ho Naa Ho (Tomorrow May Never Come)
It stars: Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Preity Zinta
Set in London, this film tells the story of an MBA student who falls for his new neighbor. But a happy ending seems impossible because he has a secret that forces him to ~push her away~.
It stars: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D'Cruz
This film is set in the 1970s in Darjeeling, India, and tells the story of Murphy aka Barfi. The trailer tells us: "After falling in love with the beautiful Shruti, Barfi's sweet-natured demeanor faces its biggest challenge as Shruti's socially conscious parents force her to marry a more conventional suitor. Her decision sets in motion a chain of events that turn her, and Barfi's, life upside down."
BONUS: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (This Youth Is Crazy)
It stars: Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone
This film about growing up and falling in love tells the story of a shy medical student and a happy-go-lucky dreamer who wants to travel the world. They have totally different plans for the future, but there's no denying that there's a spark between them. Disclaimer: Up until a few months ago, this movie was on Netflix Philippines. Please bring this movie back, Netflix!
